Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

if you want to be technical it's advancing giants or advancing titans.

but "attack on titan" was an official translation afaik.

I thought it was Yeager. Which, you know, is even worse.

what's wrong with bertolt though? it's a real german name, not even an americanisation like yeager

"Yeager" is not an Americanization. People were spelling it that way long before the U.S. was a country.

I decided to indulge this against my better judgement and wasted a few hours digging around on the internet and speaking with both history majors and German language majors.

I could not find a single German person living today OR in the pre 18th Century (to meet your criteria of "before the US was a country") that spells their surname "Yeager". It is almost universally 'Jäeger' (or 'Jäger, going further back historically).

So... unless you can back that up with some facts when the rest of the world seems to agree with the idea that the "Yeager" spelling was created by the US immigration system, you're wrong.

Genuine European here chipping in to say that Yeager is pronounced differently from Jäeger. Yeager is pronounced "Yeeger", but Jäeger is- well, you've seen the anime, more like "Yayger".

Speaking as a German anon, Bertolt is either an exceedingly, extremely rare version or a simple misspelling of the much more common Berthold. The way they say it in the anime would make any German who hears it default to spelling it as 'Berthold' unless it's directly implied differently because... it's a language thing. The 'hard t' at the end means that Bertolt would be more pronounced like somebody would say 'duck' in English, with a very harsh ending sound, while Berthold is more comparable to 'duke' with its flow.

I honestly like "Attack on Titan" better than "Advance of the Titans".

It makes the title more proactive than reactive. It makes the story not about the Titans over-running the world, but about the humans rising up against them.
