Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

so, uh, what do you do when you have to provide a wiki link for your character's history, but the wiki is missing huge chunks of important information? the series is too obscure for wikipedia proper and the single fandom wiki is a hot mess that's missing like half of his history (and he's one of the main characters whose backstory is revealed immediately so there isn't much excuse). it's got just enough to look plausible so i'm gonna look like i'm making shit up or headcanoning huge swathes of his motivation, what do i do?

i don't know shit about wiki-editing and it looks like there's a lot of inter-editor politics i really don't want to jump into just to get my app accepted. is it okay to summarize the stuff that got left out and just trust that the mods will take my word for it that i didn't make it up? i don't think any of them are familiar with the series and it's a book so i can't just link a youtube video or something.

haha i'm in a similar boat, anon. for some reason none of the wiki articles on my character mention a big life-changing incident that happened in her past (although i guess it's understandable because i'm playing from a specific adaption that the wikis mostly gloss over). mine is also from a book, so i just added a note that this happened and the wiki didn't mention it, if they decide they need proof i can try to provide it.

in my experience, as long as you're not obviously being a wanker then most mods err on the side of leniency. i'd say summarize it for now and if they think they need validation you can try to work something out then.

i just had to go through this with an app. i just wrote out the history section myself. used the wiki link as a sort of basis like, 'okay, they got that part right, but they could go into it a bit more' and then just had it all on my app instead of linking to the wiki. wikis aren't always the end all be all of things and i didnt have any problem with my app getting accepted because of it.

just make sure that you're covering all your character's poignant parts and aren't just droning on and on to fill in space. keep it concise but make sure that the relevant parts of the series and the character are there so that if they do go look at the wiki, they can see that it's similar but more in depth and they'll likely understand why you bothered to write it out.

Speaking as someone who's been an app mod in several games, just giving them a quick "hey the wiki doesn't cover this important thing that happened so I'm going to explain it here" should be fine. If they really want to or think it sounds weird I'm sure they can Google info on the book to clarify.

Sometimes you just have to trust your player's apps when it comes to canons you're not familiar with.

As someone who used to play from a canon that has a fuckawful wiki, I think you worry too much. Just write out the history section and make a note that the fandom wiki leaves out of crucial app-necessary info. It's never caused me a problem.

Well...

I'd look at it this way.

OPTION 1: Go to the wiki page, summarize the stuff that got left out.

OPTION 2: Go to your app, summarize the stuff that got left out.

If the mods think you're a fucking bullshitting liar just because your summary wasn't posted upon a ~wiki~ it's probably a game you're better off not being in.

i once applied to a game with a character who has a pretty big wiki page but all it discussed was her romance with another character. NONE of her backstory. i ended up just writing out her history instead, and i'd probably do the same in this situation. it's a pain in the ass, but it also helped me get more insight to the character when i had to go through her history all at once. :)

If you have the book up as an ebook or PDF, maybe link/copy and paste the important pages? It seems like a bit of trouble but it might help. My wiki is godawful too so I don't like using it either.

the last two times i had to write my own histories, i just wrote my own history and didn't link the wiki at all.

the (different) fandom wikis for each character are terrible, and even the protagonist didn't escape that. meanwhile one has stuff on regular wikipedia, but it's nowhere near enough for a history.

+1

I played a character from a teen novel once and (unsurprisingly) the wiki was shit. Wrote that history up myself.

Make a note that while the wiki covers some of it, it doesn't cover all of it, on the app as the text for the link. And then go on to summarize what was left. Any mod worth their salt will look into it and confirm, usually with people they trust who are canon familiar.
