Looking at the journal it says it's how the character identifies themselves: he's small, he's gay, he's Jewish.

he's talking to his professor about some shit going on in his life and eventually says "i'm small. i'm gay. i'm jewish. and i'm from sheffield. i'm fucked." not sure if that's how you spell his town but it's not some deep thing how he defines himself

tbh it's a shitty username you could have so much better. that movie is rife with good quotes you could use other than that

I just took it that way, doesn't make any difference to me, the quote was there for anyone to see.

But in honesty who cares? I'd rather pay more attention to how someone plays than how creative or uncreative they are with a username.

if it was a username that was uncreative because it used lulz or wtf or something, that would be one thing

but it's not like that. it's kind of gross.

I'm more linefacing that she plays a Jewish character and yet doesn't know that people who practice Judaism (as opposed to, say, people who claim a religion but don't really practice it) have a thing about spelling out the name of G-d.

the thing is the mods have answered questions about, for instance, characters with dyslexia and said that the chip in their heads that connects to the network is (at least with text) pretty much taking thoughts and putting them in text format. there's never, ever any actual writing or typing anyway.

i don't know if that totally flies all the time and i'm pretty sure people don't do it consistently but given that this is an established player, i'm not convinced there's a real issue of lack of knowledge about the religious aspects so much as them handling the network differently.

It's a slightly more complicated issue than never writing it anyway; the reason you aren't supposed to do it is that it's seen as disrespectful to write God's name in full on something that you might just throw away or otherwise treat disrespectfully (eg, a piece of paper). Whether or not you can type "God" on the internet is debated, given that the internet isn't a physical object and therefore can't be physically disrespected in the same way, but a lot of Jewish people don't adhere to it online. Given the network, you could probably make an argument for the same applying here.

Dyslexia =/= Judaism. One is a disability, one is a spiritual choice. And your second point makes no sense, since you're not supposed to /pronounce/ the name of G-d, either, which means it's actually even /worse./

I've got no beef with the player, but if she can't get Jew 101 right, then I am just going to skip over her posts and hope she puts them under cuts so I don't have to see her further botching my religion. She has every right for her pretendy funtimes, but I have a right to not be part of it and to say I'm not real thrilled.

First of all, that character, in his canon, isn't practicing - at all.

Secondly, the other reply to this comment is both accurate and relevant, in regards to both to the reasons as to why this is problematic for some Jews, and the fact that there is debate in regards to it, even online, and that some find it fine (and their reasoning) and that some don't (and theirs).

Furthermore, the network means it's neither being pronounced nor typed nor written. It's being thought, and those thoughts are being converted over to the text. This is how the network and chip work in Ariel. The dyslexia was an example of both not reading, nor writing, in order to use the text function of the network. It's literally all in your head and converted upon sending.

There are a lot of ways to Jew 'right' - or wrong- and variations within individuals and what they do and don't follow. The player seems to b adhering to canon of this particular character, as I remember him. Which is not practicing, strictly or otherwise, and certainly not reverent in any way, shape, or form.

By all means skip their posts, but it doesn't sound like you know the first thing about the character, the canon, or the game. Nor nearly as much about Judaism as you think you do.

If he wasn't that devout, I get it, but then why would he throw G-d into his first post as like just about the very first thing he says (not the poetry). Your excuse smacks either of whiteknight or the whiff of Skidmo herself.

Nice try, but I don't need to prove my religious heritage to you. And I honestly don't even need to be Jewish to have a right to have an opinion as to how someone is going to represent a religion. At least our Kurt player has actually /worried/ about offending Catholics.

Skidmo makes pa plurks but doesn't go in. Becky goes in like on the HMD when someone mentioned Skidmo making them uncomfortable with pa behavior.

Going by the length of the comment? Yeah more than likely Becky. It's almost always her when any comment here or on WG is particularly long. Not always but I'd say 8/10 times it's her.

Yeah, uh, not every Jew takes that stuff seriously. Some of us are really bad at being Jews. In fact, I'd dare to say that's most of us.

I know several Jews who have no issues with typing "God" online.
