Bucky Barnes | MCU

Definitely after falling from the train in The First Avenger, but advice in general would be great, and advice on how to handle the Winter Soldier would be very much appreciated as well.

Alright, this is all a bit off the top of my head, so apologies in advance if I jump around a lot. I'm going highly, highly recommend taking a look at the comics if you haven't already. Go for the issues written by Ed Brubaker, he's considered to be the writer in regards to Bucky.

As far as movie-verse stuff goes, here's my two cents on it. First off, the fish out of water aspect of playing him a present day setting, whether in memes or a game, is going to inevitably crop up He's going to be a little bit out of his element, but he's not stupid. His personality is flexible. When Steve turns up as the super-soldier version of himself, he takes it in stride. I imagine it would be the same for ending up in unfamiliar times and territory.

The Winter Soldier is very much a different-yet-alike character in regards to Bucky. They're both extremely focused and determined to succeed in their missions. The difference is that the Winter Soldier has no moral compass or limitations. He'll shoot a man in the head without a second thought, while Bucky might hesitate and ask why this man deserves to die.

One thing that I see a lot of Buckys missing out on is his humor. He's got a sarcastic edge to his humor, but it's not always bitter and biting. Sometimes, it's just good-humored jabs. With all the angst in his life, this part of his personality might be subdued, but don't forget about it entirely.

Read Captain America: First Vengeance if you haven't already. I know plenty of people will argue you don't need to read supplemental materials for a movie character, but this is a Marvel canon and the tie-in comics are important to fleshing out things they can't get to in the movies. Bucky gets a lot of scenes in that comic (including parts about his and Steve's life before the war and his time as a POW). You get a better idea of Bucky as a more well-rounded person because as much as I love CA:TFA, Bucky doesn't get much screentime because it's a movie about Steve. In the comic you see what kind of a flirt he is and how before what happened as a POW he was actually quite an open guy about a lot of his feelings. He is the one who initiates a lot of the physical affection between him and Steve in the comic and movie (hugs, arm around the shoulder, etc), too, which is an interesting bit to think about. In the comic, you get to see more of how he was and can compare it to how he is after Steve rescues him from the HYDRA work camp.

And I definitely agree about reading the first half of Captain America vol 5, which is Brubaker's run of Cap that focuses heavily on Bucky and on the Winter Soldier (really vol 5 in general is way more about Bucky than it is about Steve). You don't need to pay attention so much to the events as you do the characters because Sebastian Stan himself said he used Brubaker's run as a big influence on how he interpreted the script and played Bucky.

Bucky is a darker character than Steve. He's got an edge to him and it's part of what makes him such a good soldier. Bucky can do the dirty work that Captain America won't or shouldn't. He can shoot a guy in the head with his sniper rifle and not even hesitate when his brains splatter the wall because he's already reloading to shoot the next guy. In some ways he might even enjoy it because he's good at it and he knows it. He isn't someone who will follow orders without questioning them ever, but he is more likely to assume that if he's told to kill someone they probably deserve it. Steve will kill if he has to, but in my opinion, Bucky is pragmatic enough to know that if you have an enemy who can cause you a lot of damage, killing them is the most efficient way of eliminating the threat. He's more cynical than Steve and has seen a lot of the fucked up things humans are capable of. It's one of the reasons why he and Steve complement each other so well because they give each other that other side of reality.

Bucky is a good guy though. He can be kind and funny and stupid and a huge flirt. He can hang out with the guys getting drunk or having dumb bets or smile at some pretty girl and feed her a bunch of corny lines, but the intent behind them can still feel genuine even if it's obvious the lines are full of shit. And he has a lot of respect for women, so if a woman doesn't want him, he's not going to push himself on her. He knows when a girl needs a bit of coaxing or when she's just not interested. He's not lacking at all in confidence or ego so one girl turning him down isn't going to hurt him much (as seen by how easily he rebounds after Peggy all but ignoring him.) He knows he's a good looking guy and that more than enough women respond to him.

He's not afraid to break the rules (and will), but usually he's the one having to keep Steve from doing something stupid. He's used to being the protector between them and it's only been a couple years that the roles have been somewhat reversed so keep that in mind. Bucky does have a temper and sore points that will get under his skin, too. In the tie-in comic he almost comes to blows with Dugan (despite having pneumonia), because he keeps calling him "Jimmy" and Bucky hates that nickname. Why is never mentioned, but in the 616 comics Jim/Jimmy was what people called his father (who died in a military accident), and what his sister Becca called him, so that could be a part of it. He's not afraid to throw a punch or start a fight, but Bucky is someone who can weigh the pros and cons of a situation and decide whether it's worth getting involved in.

Currently, you can't handle the Winter Soldier. If you are taking Bucky from after falling off the train, then to him, he's about to die. He may even consider himself to be dead in his own world after he's gotten used to the idea of being in some jamjar (if you are putting him into a jamar). Therefore at that time, for Bucky, the Winter Soldier does not exist. It's not even a factor into how you play him. The fact the movie hasn't come out yet means you shouldn't make too many guesses about it either. It was said during on of the Comic Cons that they were basing Bucky's part of the movie heavily on the comic, but you don't know how much so you're best bet is to stay vague. Once the movie has been released you can make more decisions there. It's no different than if you had picked up a character from a 10 book series from the third book. Those other books haven't happened yet so you don't act like they have.

It's not movie canon, but there's an arc/trade Brubaker did called the Life Story of Bucky Barnes. Shouldn't be too hard to find, but I think the preWinter Soldier parts might be of use to you.
