Uhh

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

idgi, i'm a better person than every christian i know and i always get the sympathetic, "you're going to hell" treatment.

it's because christianity isn't about being a good person. it's about being on the supposed "winning side" regardless of how immoral or shitty you are while you're basking in god's favor.

the whole "being a good person" thing is a nice pipe dream that some friendly christians like to cling to, but the fact of the matter is that the majority of christians couldn't give less of a shit. it isn't and has never been about improving your life or the lives of others. it's about being "right".

oh, this makes sense.

i don't want to agree with this but it's fairly self-evident since consider various atrocities in the name of god, bingo card, etc. etc. the other-ing effect that this produces makes for a lot of catastrophic empathy (and yes, moral) failure.

It's not even about being right, it's about securing their place in "heaven". Part of what makes Christianity so annoying is the fact that they believe that they must convert all non-believers as well. So they feel if they preach to everyone to get them to believe in their god, then they secure their own place in heaven and in the process feel like they did something good by leading someone else to the "right" path.

Christianity wouldn't be anywhere near the level of annoying that it is if they'd just remove the parts that say Christians must convert others because most people find the bible thumping to be the most annoying and the fact that Christians won't respect the beliefs of others because of it. What makes it even more infuriating is that the vast majority of Christians feel that threats and fear are the best way to convert and that leads people to hate them even more. I'd not mind if more Christians would actually attempt to have an intelligent discourse on religion, but I know the moment I admit to not being Christian around most Christians that I'm going to hear that I'm going to hell and I'm going to counter that with the fact that I don't even believe in heaven or hell and believe in reincarnation, etc. It's just boring and tedious and I'm never going to be converted to a religion that hates and threatens and tosses out parts of their own bible as they see fit.

Not quite, but close. But honestly, I got the same even before I lived here. One doesn't need to live in the bible belt to meet stupid Christians who want to convert you, the bible belt just has far more of them and they'll even come to your door.

I've been told my more than one Christian that being a good person won't get you anything in the afterlife. They scoff at the entire notion of goodness being aspired to over everything. They tell you that being good is no substitute for "accepting Jesus Christ".

Apparently, as long as you give lip service to Jesus, being a good person is just optional.

Which explains a lot of the atrocities by Christians over the centuries. If you're told that worshiping God is more important than being a good person, what incentive do you have to be good?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
does that really bother you though? i mean who gives a fuck what random christians say to you?

As someone else who doesn't believe in hell, it's not so much that they think I'll go to some place I don't believe in, it's that they think that just because I don't believe in their god that I am worthy of eternal damnation and suffering. I may not believe such a place exists, but they do and they believe that I deserve it and that is just as cruel as telling someone to go die in a fire in my eyes.

This is my problem. I don't believe in any religion, but the fact that people think because I don't believe in theirs that I deserve a terrible fate for eternity is terrible. It's like someone telling me I deserve to be flogged, stoned, and then crucified for telling someone Santa Claus doesn't exist.

I may not believe in hell, but they do. Whether or not they're delusional, people wanting me to be tortured for all eternity for not agreeing with them is a bit bothersome.
