I understand your frustration but be honest the answer is obvious. There are no magical girls or vampires in real life that could get offended. It's that simple.

And trust me, if Tumblr is anything to go by, somebody will find some way to be offended no matter what. Thus why nobody wants to breach that territory.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No, sorry. THIS is also a bullshit excuse. You mess up representation of a PoC and get called out for it? You OWN UP, apologize for messing up, and do better. Not trying because you're scared of being called racist doesn't fix the lack of representation at all.

PoCs aren't unicorns, we're human beings, and while there's something to the Asian, or the black, or the Hispanic, or any other non-white perspective that no one else from any other race will completely understand, you can at least make a fucking effort.

When someone plays a genius scientist, a cop, or an athlete and they mess up, they get called out and it's expected of them to apologize for the mistake and try to fix it. No one says YOU CAN NEVER PLAY ANY OF THESE EVER.

People play plenty of Japanese characters (not anime characters, but characters who are Japanese) and yet I bet majority of the muns don't even know Japanese or are that read up on Japanese culture. They don't go around saying they can't play them because OH THEY AREN'T JAPANESE SO THEY'LL NEVER UNDERSTAND THEM. Why are minorities so different?

Re: +10000

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
playing japanese characters without knowing shit about the culture isn't exactly a good thing, lbr

Re: +10000

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
not saying it is. but i'm saying it's hypocritical to claim that minorities are somehow too much to play because "they don't know them" while so many will turn around the exact thing with people from other cultures or countries.

it does not take much to do a little research.

Although, to be quite honest, I think it's more so that people are afraid of being confronted with the possibility of their own internalized biases more than being publicly castigate for it.

But a couple of the above anons should note that they're revealing said biases quite nicely already, and if anyone's fooled, it sure as hell isn't me.

I'm not saying that it's right or that it fixes things, but that is the answer and that's all there is to it. It's pretty obvious why. Is it a problem? Yes. Does that change the facts? No.

I want more people to stand up and represent my race too but at the same time I'm not sitting here scratching my head over why nobody does it. I know why.

Such a bs excuse. I think people are more racist when they act like we are going to scream racist at every little thing they do. No way. I may try to politely correct incorrect assumptions but there really isn't any "universal experience" for any minority anywhere. And to assume you'll fuck up a character because you don't know about something that essentially doesn't exist is screwed up.

They weren't giving an excuse they were saying why people avoid playing minorities. And they're right.

looked like they gave an excuse for the people who avoid playing minorities to me

it's an excuse. and its an excuse i'm tired of hearing. i am not a white person, or japanese, or a doctor, or a chinese person, or a hawaiian, or scottish

I still play and write all those characters. and I do my best to represent them and try to figure out how they should be handled and what their circumstances would have been like or how growing up where they did would affect them. I don't just sit around and say "Well i'm not this and i have never seen this so i shouldn't write it."

So if you want to write a minority, just do it. spend a few minutes on google, look up documentaries, ask on RP anons if there is someone of some certain race who can help you out. Don't just sit on your hands and make excuses about how you 'can't find anyone'.

Re: +a million

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
It is an excuse. How can we expect anything to change in terms of how we deal with race in this world if no one is willing to take risks? It's still such a problem today because no one wants to touch the issue for fear of pissing someone off. But if you don't try you can't learn and if you don't learn how will we ever come to understand one another better? By not talking about it, by not sharing experiences or correcting misinterpretations, by being scared we just allow the problem to perpetuate. The only way to get the world to a place where one day race may not be an issue (and I understand that such a world will probably need a few more centuries to ever possibly exist) is to stop making excuses now.

I think more people are scared of white armchair slackavists attacking them than they are of the actual minority getting offended. I know I would be.

This.

No one wants to deal with the tumblr sjws coming for you.

condescending white girls who only play pouty white people themselves can fuck right off

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but those call outs can get vicious. I'm a poc, yeah, but I'm also sheltered as fuck so I'm not sure how much my opinion matters? But I do have anxiety issues and I can't imagine having to deal with a whole bunch of people breathing down your neck and criticizing you constantly. This is the crowd that thinks white people cosplaying pocs is white washing and white people listening to rap is cultural appropriation and fetishizing.

And then there's the fact that 1) the world is not America, so things that are huge sins for the African American community may not be that well known outside of America. I've literally never heard of the watermelon thing until I came to America. As a poc, I can claim ignorance, but as a white person? I'd be tarred with the Racist label and the Internet never forgets.

You might not *JUDGE* a white person who plays poc characters, but enough people will that if you're sensitive to that kind of bashing, it really affect you to be seen as a horribad bigot for the rest of your rp life.

Basically, I'm sure you've heard the words 'fetishizing', 'appropriation', and 'SJ brownie points', and everyone wants to see people in the worst possible light. Not the mention the people who will cuss out someone who makes an honest mistake but not explain what they did wrong because THEY DON'T HAVE TO EDUCATE U. It's frustrating that PoCs get shafted on representation because of that, but I don't see the point in pretending that the only reason a white person would be hesitant to play a PoC is because they are secretly horrible racists.

Re: ayrt

what makes this entire thread so funny to me is that i've seen poc ocs handled REALLY BADLY and no one said anything about it. at all.

the app literally used the term "token black friend" since she went to a predominately white upper middle class high school. if they can get away without a single side eye you can get away with some shit too.

yeah seriously

the only shitty racist interpretation i've ever seen get called out was an asian oc who used r's instead of l's in their dialogue, and that's probably because most dwrpers seem to think they have a phd in asians

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
i don't understand why that's worth calling out though. mixing of 'r's and 'l's actually do happen (though not to all asians obvs, and not in all words. from experience, koreans, and a chinese classmate does confuse their 'r's and 'l's).

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
the problem was it was in all words. or one of the problems iirc.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
no the character literally spoke in "you no take candle"

which in retrospect was more bitch worthy than the l/r thing, since mixups do happen irl and all, but it was constant and they piled the two together so anons got stuck on it

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't just that, but it was also part of the extremely gross and stereotypical Japanese accent she tried to write for this girl.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
that depends on the playerbase you app into

there was a recent wankgate kerfuffle over an arab (?) oc

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
i saw a kerfuffle over an arabic oc once but that's because someone was using a white model for their pb....

Oh yeah and there was the other one, where they used a bunch of different icons of different women from different races (white, indian, arabic etc) in hijabs.
