Countdown to free!dom

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

i've been rping psls with my main rp player for years now and we never get bored, even though both of us have felt stale with other people. i think it's because we concentrate mainly on big plots and let the small-scale stuff (like shipping and other character relationships) grow naturally out of whatever storyline we have going on. we've done realistic historical au plots, big apocalyptic fantasy showdowns between good and evil, crossover mashups of whatever canons we're into at the moment... just working out the worldbuilding can keep us occupied for weeks. since we'll both play 5-10 characters at once, it's like we have a small game instead of just a psl. the changing settings, character roles and relationships keep things exciting, and we're always trying to theorize and figure out where the story will go next. we're actually not even in any of the same fandoms anymore but we love rping together.

so my advice for keeping rp exciting (at least in psls) is to think about everything but cr, shipping and characterization. those are the easy things. they'll come naturally. instead, work on your storytelling. build your setting, complicate your plots, and give yourself something to daydream about all day when you're not rping.

work out your plots, and always have something big and external to the characters happening. if you're doing an au psl about the mafia, don't just have the characters interact in seedy bars, have them smuggling something/bribing cops/plotting against the mafia boss/whatever. especially if your characters have conflicting interests, it can bring a lot more spice into the storyline.
