Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

weird question maybe but what would be your ideal portrayal of bipolar 1?

hmmm. i think this is a really subjective question that could have some really varying answers depending on who you asked, so take everything that i say with a grain of salt, because even if the disorder is the same, or even if you're ultimately at the same point on the spectrum, everyone is going to experience this thing differently. that said, these are my thoughts:

- this person would have an extremely disorganized pattern of sleep, ideally an erratic combination of too much and too little.
- this person would be intelligent, but not necessarily rational during every argument; it wouldn't be an intelligence that could be shown off in every single conversation as with some stereotypically smart characters. what's more, this person's scope of knowledge might be limited primarily to what interests them most, placing emphasis on what they chose to focus on rather than having them just absorb whatever information is in front of them.
- this person might be easily unsettled, or have a streak of paranoia, especially if their manic phases are prominent. due to, perhaps, a self-consciousness regarding their mental state, they might feel that people in public pay more attention to them than they actually do.
- this person WOULDN'T necessarily flit between moods like a hummingbird, unless they were explicitly said to be rapid-cycling. certainly it might be noticeable, but their temperament doesn't need to change in between every conversation they have with someone. having bipolar disorder doesn't really mean that you're having a jekyll/hyde type deal, even if it can seem that way sometimes.
- this person might be promiscuous, but emotionally closed off regarding relationships. the idea of having a serious relationship can be really scary when you're mentally ill.
- this person might be kind of a pack-rat. they might have a really intense habit of spending TONS of money on stuff they really don't need, and then, after coming down from that emotional high, might realize that they're really only going to use maybe 10% of all the shit they bought. lots of bobbles and clutter and clothes they're never going to wear. suffering bank account.
- remember that many people with bipolar disorder, even bipolar 1, do have periods of being 'normal' in between extreme moods. they don't always have to be super intense about what they're feeling. sometimes the change between moods will happen naturally, and sometimes something environmental might set it off, but it doesn't need to be a constant thing.
- this person might have a tendency to change their appearance/style often, even in small ways: dyeing/styling hair differently, buying differently styles of clothing to create a really varied wardrobe.
- depression in bipolar people is often portrayed or misconstrued as an extremely dramatic thing, but often, it'll be more like hitting an emotional stonewall and feeling dead to the world.
- this person might have extremely strong opinions but feel somewhat insecure in them, concerned that their erratic moods influence their opinions and rob them of their validity.
- this person wouldn't be seeing/hearing things on the level of a person with schizophrenia, but hallucinations would definitely be possible, and absolutely terrifying. alternatively (or as a supplement), hallucinations of a religious nature (i.e., god is talking to me, i am chosen by god to do x thing, i AM god/an incarnation of god) are more or less common. mania could induce a religious fervor that otherwise wouldn't be present in the individual.

this probably isn't the most comprehensive list, but it's a lot of what came to mind when thinking of media portrayals of bipolar 1 vs what i have seen and experienced in real life. i hope even a little of that was interesting/helpful/something positive for you!

This is me. I really like this list, anon. On the hallucinations front, sort of unrelated but did you know a lot of doctors say the worst psychotic episodes they see are usually women with bipolar that have just given birth? Apparently a lot of women have their worst manic episodes shortly after birth and have delusions and hallucinations on a schizophrenic level while still experiencing all the other lovely effects of mania.

that sounds horrifying. D: i didn't know that, but it's really interesting (and scary hahaha i'm walling off my uterus from the world)! with how bad mania can be sometimes, the idea of giving birth to and mothering an infant is already absolutely terrifying.
