Countdown to free!dom

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

if it's NOS then it seems like episodes of true mania would be few and far between, otherwise a clear diagnosis of bp1 would have been made. more likely to cycle between hypomania (which a lot of people say feels amazing because it keeps them energetic and productive, but it has its drawbacks of increased irritability, decreased concentration, etc.) and depression. the bp2 article on wikipedia gives you a good jumping off point for symptoms to look for when you play them during a depressive period. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_II_disorder#Depressive_episodes

also, the switch can happen randomly, but a lot of people on the bipolar spectrum have consistent mood "triggers." a common one is not getting enough sleep. i personally know i can trigger hypomania by pulling an all-nighter. some people have to avoid specific foods. often there are situations and toxic people that will act as triggers, same as any other mood or personality disorder.

the thing is that, with this, there's possibly a certain amount of underlying disordered thinking in general. the extent to which you take this is up to you, and that also depends on how noticeable you want to make the fact that your character has some issues. example: some people with bpd tend towards sort of paranoid personal schemas as an underlying maladaptive thought pattern, which you'll see manifest in bp1 during extreme mania with the cliche "everyone is out to get me/i can't even trust my own family" thing that happens. bp2/nos isn't that extreme.

the thing to keep in mind is that this isn't did. they don't become "a different person." think of it more as an abrupt mood shift and a wild exaggeration of traits already present, taken to either end of the spectrum.
