One thing I find helpful with garnering CR for people like Lightning is finding characters who are similar to those she feels a kinship with or protective toward. Despite her early canon behavior, she has a strong desire to protect others and guarantee their safety. While she joins the Guardian Corps to help with her sister's tuition, it's obviously a job that involves protecting other people. I'd say it's best to not bounce her too much against people who will immediately make her angry early on in a game, because without incentive, she won't go out of her way to learn about them or form a rapport. Even though she isn't friendly, she isn't a horrible person either, and if something required group effort, she could be reluctantly convinced to assist. Sometimes you'll have to make an executive decision and force her out there too.

Speaking of her job...I forgot to mention Amodar. You only see a little bit of him but she's respectful, polite and even a little awkward. She's obviously well-respected in her field, because Team Blitz cares a lot about her in XIII-2 and even theme their names around her nickname. So I think she's capable of being amicable, she's just a little awkward and uncomfortable when that does happen. I don't think she had much of a childhood or a teenage...hood, so this reflects in her dealings with peers.

this is all really useful, anon, and exactly what i was hoping for. thank you for writing it all out! i'm not sure if i'm going to app her anywhere until i can get more practice in, but i'm bookmarking this to keep it in mind, because that's all great advice re: hooks. thanks! ♥
