How do you feel about app challenges?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Mixed feelings. I'd like to get the better player in games, but sometimes it leads to friends that planned to play together getting shafted and usually just breeds wank. Overall they're probably not a great idea.

I think they're fair if the mod team doesn't suck/is unbiased because the best player of character x should be the one that gets to have them in game.

What sucks is that people are really immature about this sort of thing. Losing an app challenge is often the end of the world for most RPers and if it's a cast situation, and the castmates already in game are friends, and the person who loses the app challenge is in tight with them, it's practically a guarantee of drama. I've seen a lot of pressure for the person who won the app challenge to drop under those circumstances-- usually covertly, just given the tittybaby nature of this place.

Furthermore, most mods will turn a blind eye to "cast drama" because it's generally expected to be handled among the people in question, as well as the default expectation that if your cast doesn't seem to like you, you drop, and that solves the problem.

There's also the issue of people apping a character in an attempt to freeze out a particular player, for whatever reason. I'll confess to having done this a few times in the past, but that's only because the person trying to app in was both wanky and a mediocre RPer, and no one in the cast wanted to deal with that.

i love them

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
why?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
because i feel like i always have a shot. i don't get frozen out of a spot because i was at work, and i can go head-on against those players who like to play the same character i do at every possible game.

Perfectly fine. Who should get in shouldn't be decided on somebody who got to the reserve list faster.

it makes it fair for everyone, not just the people in standard us timezones.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I find them silly, honestly.

Find another game to play the character at.

sa

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that and it always just seems so unnecessarily ~dramatic.~ We don't want the first reserver to get it just because they're the first, so we're going to pick from the...first two people who app instead of just the first? And really, I've seen a ton of places in which they decide app challenges - when everything else is equal - based upon...who reserved first. It just seems like an unnecessarily dramatic addition.

IMO, the best places that have/had app challenges are the ones where there's no reserve, email in your apps by whatever date and they'll all get mass judged at once, and if that means there's seven Jack Frosts then let the best one win.

sa, again

Actually, I'm now curious. Have any of you ever seen an app challenge end with a polite, "Well, you both kinda suck, sorry, we're not taking either of you."?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Very mixed feelings.

On the one hand, they are great. If they are fair, you are guaranteed to get the best version of the character available, it's not determined by the speed of app writing/whether you just had to copy-paste an app or wrote it from scratch/who reserved fastest.

On the other hand, some mods play favors.
And if my friends and I are in a cast together and expect to get another buddy's version of the character, but get an entirely different one... That can suck. Doesn't have to, if everyone is mature about it, but if it's a player you don't like from the get-go, well, this can shit all over your fun. It can also turn out nasty for the unsuspecting challenger - imagine you see a neat cast lacking whatever character you have to offer, you throw in your app, not knowing that the other applicant is friends with the cast, you get excited, you get IN - and then people in game avoid you.

I'm fine with them with a caveat because it happened to me. If you challenge my app in the reserve and the mods aren't going to judge either app until both are in

WRITE YOUR FUCKING APP OR WITHDRAW YOUR CHALLENGE

I had a challenge to my reserve last year. Fine. No big. It happens. And then they just didn't app, leaving me to wait out the entire open app cycle knowing the mods weren't going to touch my app until apps were closed or the challenge came in, whichever came first.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No sir, I don't like them. I consider the app process a hurdle to ensure a baseline level of quality, not a competition to get the 'best' version of a character.

They do make some sense in an app cycle environment where otherwise the second apper would have to wait a month, but I don't like app cycles either.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Also mixed feelings. In theory it's a good idea to get quality, but they're used horribly.

And by the way, where do you draw the line? Because if quality is what matters, then you should be able to challenge someone aleady in game too, but doing that would mean not contanst cr because characters likes Jack Frost or Loki or whoever is the falvor of the month would change every other week.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
i've participated in a couple and won, so i don't particularly dislike them, but thinking about it objectively... yeah, i'm going with the anon who said that they're kind of silly. and while sometimes one app is much less quality than the other, what happens when they're about equal in terms of quality? awkward for both the losing player and the mods to deal with, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
don't care

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I used them to oust bad players who are apping into my cast by having friends challenge their app (don't regret it either) so they aren't all bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
i think that they're alright for the most part, so long as the mods actually inform the original apper that they're being challenged at some point before the apps are turned in.

yeah, speaking from personal experience there. yeah, i'm kind of bitter still.
