I have to admit that the age difference thing doesn't actually bother me.

But, i'm from the UK. Legal age is 16 BUT so long as you're 'mature enough' the NHS will provide free protection and keep quiet about people underage having sex.

That said. Anyone ever notice that a pairing in like Twilight with a huge age gap is accepted but anything above a couple of years is creepy?

I have constantly pointed out the pedo factor between vampires and their actual TEENAGE paramours. Edward/Bella, Stefan-Damon/Elena. Like, I know they can't really hang out with humans their own age, but you'd think that they might have an appreciation for older women as well as teenyboppers since they've actually matured and lived for a few lifetimes. What age they were at when they were turned doesn't really matter. Even with that, 24-17 was eww at the beginning of TVD.

Yet the majority of people accept it as though it doesn't matter.

Same applies here in a sense. The age differences are meant to be creepy. Kate/Derek, played to make Kate creepy. Derek/Erica, also played to show that he can be creepy and to show exactly how desperate Erica is for a cure.
If the majority of fans don't care though? It's going to carry on.

Given that the loudest fans are the Sterek fandom, it's definitely going to carry on.

I guess I'm a minority in that I'm not a Sterek shipper, but I'm not really an anyone shipper.

I get what they were going for with Kate/Derek and Erica/Derek, but it kind of makes me dislike Derek as a character that he was so desperate for a pack that he went and picked up what were basically children with severe image and social issues and 'bettered' them to make himself stronger. I haven't really seen anything from Derek that leads me to believe he actually gives a shit about any of them, aside from Scott who isn't even officially in his pack. The whole 'I have someone else in mind for you' remark to Erica really grated on my nerves because it had that tone of 'I'm the lord of the manor and you will marry/fuck/please whoever I tell you to' and I can sort of picture her being like "I didn't sign up for this shit."

But that's the point.

You're not meant to like Derek. He's meant to be that character with questionable motives, he's not meant to be a nice guy.

He picked three people who would be likely to form a quick pack. What's quicker than to pick three people who want companionship?
Isaac was alone and abused. Erica was alone and laughed at. Boyd was alone and seemingly ignored.

That said, I would maybe suggest going back and watching them interact. Derek does tell Boyd at one point to take the car back and leave the hunters to him. Erica insists that she be taken to Derek after being poisoned and he helps her. Derek does stop Isaac in the final episode and have a hand on his shoulder.

One thing to note is that Derek wasn't prepared to be an Alpha. He didn't trust people enough to be a good leader and instead pushed them around and kept pointing out why they needed him. In his mind the best way to get someone to stay is to give them a reason against leaving.

He's a dick but, there is some character development there.

I fully intend to do a rewatch shortly, so I'll keep an eye out for those things. I suppose I just focused more on the more questionable aspects because they were questionable. I get that he wasn't prepared and probably didn't want to be Alpha, but I was also a little disappointed with how he want around afterwards. I also personally hate it when characters do that whole, 'you need me so I'm going to be mysterious and give you vague snippets of information that will probably do you more harm than good' route, because it always winds up fucking over the person that's just trying to figure out what's going on.

Scott had better control over his wolfy powers with just Stiles and his focus on Allison to go on. Derek wasn't much of a help, at least not in terms of him actually helping Scott figure out which method was best for him. Breaking his arm to make a point was a bully kind of way to make a point.

Like I said, Derek isn't meant to be a really likeable character. You're meant to see him do things and then essentially side with Scott.
Especially in season 1 where Derek was literally out to keep himself alive.

That said. I would assume that a proper explanation as to why he was so quick to form a pack will show up at the start of season 3. Given that season 2 trailed off with it being mentioned that Derek needed a pack before the alphas came to town.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but how did he know the Alphas were coming to town? He killed Peter out of self defense and then started building a pack, but mention of the Alphas weren't made until the end of the season, so why did he spend the whole 2nd season recruiting? I thought it was because of the kanima and the Argents, but again, I could be wrong. When Scott was talking about 'them being told the whole spiel', I don't think the alpha pack was part of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I would say that all of those questions are also going to be revealed in Season 3. It's the hook to keep you watching.

Derek supposedly knew all along. How? No-one knows yet. Why are they coming? Also a mystery.

Peter does mention that it's to do with Derek simply coming into power. It could be well known knowledge that when a new alpha takes over, others come to try and fight them for one reason or another. Hence Derek's planning ahead.

It's all speculation at the moment though.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I hadn't thought of that. BTW, thank you for taking the time to answer what kind of feels like dumb questions.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's just something to consider, really it's something that only came to mind while I was canon reviewing.

You're welcome. And they're not dumb questions, they're perfectly sensible ones. You just sort of start noticing things you hadn't noticed before after re-watching the episodes a number of times.
