I think there's some confusion over exactly what is involved. It definitely isn't a rave in much of anything but name and theme; it's nothing at all like an actual dance club. The below anon is actually not that far from accurate in their mental image, because what was asked for, and what was okayed, were some strobe lights and a set of speakers. It's not a dance club; it's an outdoor area at night with some flashing lights and music. I'm no electrician but from what little I googled, strobe lights (depending on make and size and whatnot) use between 150-700W of power. Average speakers seem to be 200-500W. The smallest and cheapest generator I looked at online was 2000W an hour, and the next size up offered was 7000W. Nothing about what is being powered is unrealistic, even if you're actually measuring out the wattage, which is a little much to bother with in rp in general anyway.

It is completely okay for your characters to call out what seems like (and objectively really is) an irresponsible use of supplies. I personally agree with you in thinking that would make for a great plot/CR. However, it's up to individual players and their characters how they want to react.

I know you were being facetious in your question about a robot unicorn, but in general the answer is that characters can make anything they both have expertise and experience for, if they also have time and supplies. Supplies needed for the characters involved in the generator project, as well as the length of time to work on them, were realistic, and therefore given the green light. Supplies needed to make something more complex, like a flying unicorn, would be less likely available.

And for the record, the player involved with this plot didn't ask me to say anything. The point was just to address the initial issue of whether it done with permission or not, and if not whether it had been overlooked by the mod teams.

We do need to get the clarification post up, though. I'll start some work on that tonight. But if you have any more specific settings issues or questions, we do have an official comment box which is anon-enabled.

Yes, but don't most generators IRL work on gasoline? Or kerosene? Neither of which would be plentiful in a post-apocolyptic environment.

Yep, and you're totally right on that. The one is question is hydrogen generator, (which admittedly I'm having a terrible time finding any decent info on about how much power they provide) which was considered feasible to build based in particular on which characters were involved.

The thing is this is still super unrealistic no matter what characters are involved. It's also unfair to players who have been trying their damndest for their characters to make ends meat or have been trying to make generators, and were just as capable to, that haven't been able to. It's basically a slap to the face to the players who have been keeping in mind the game's environment from the beginning.

I can't speak for anything more than like two weeks ago and how things were allowed or not on case by case since I have no idea, but in general anyone whose character is working on building something should be aware that they can message the mods for permission to go ahead and do the things they're doing. Characters have built generators, pipelines, machines, etc etc off and on for as long as I've been in the game, they just have to be approved, and that's so that no one just declares that their character has invented some miracle of survival that completely throws all balance out of whack. Individual projects, however, have always been potentially possible.

However, if what you meant is that you (or anyone else this applies to) have been assuming, in attempts to keep in line with the general setting, that certain materials aren't available, then I can totally understand that. I often had the same confusion about what could and couldn't be done, and I think that supplies and their general rarity (and what is always okay to assume your character can find without asking and what needs permission) is something that need to be added to the settings post mentioned earlier. I'm gonna bring up a discussion about that with the other mods so that we can work that part out and try to make it clearer for everyone involved.

i would definitely appreciate a clarification post on the setting. it did feel like a slap in the face because i've been having my character hurt for food and medicine while living in a shack without running water or electricity because i thought that was what they were supposed to do until they had been there long enough to be established.

then i see people throwing raves even if they are supposedly crappy and finding enough perishable supplies like sugar to open a bakery and i get confused. i think earlier anons mentioned a slide into a slice of life game and that's really what i feel like is going on here.

I've been in Adstring over two years and that's all it's been. The fact people have stuff to do this or aren't struggling to find food has been really what made me lose interest in the game. The fact of the matter is, it's too far gone to go back to how it should be. In part it's because of how the old mods ran things-- 'cause, seriously? Anko with a bar?

What Adstringendum needs to get back on track is a complete reboot.

A reboot or an update to the information we have about supplies, what has power/water where, general state of the city, etc. The game is 2+ years old, and even with the time-space shenannigans that supposedly go on a good deal of repair work to more populated parts of the city is reasonable.

I definitely agree that there should still be difficulties in finding more processed/machine made things and that monsters should be a daily concern if not a threat depending on where you live.

Finding a balance between the slice of life that people seem to want to play and the original survival premise of the game would probably be an amiable enough thing. It may not please everyone but it won't completely piss off one side or another.

anon-chan i think thats why they added '2+' meaning theyve been there since more than three years but forgot the very year of ad. not everyone can remember the exact date/year of games theyve been in.

I think a complete reboot is way too drastic a measure to take. There are characters who have been around for years, some even since the game's inception, and I don't think it would be fair to make them start over all that development and CR.

what if there was a setting reboot? Like, say, the machine that crashed the world together has a crazy fluctuation and dropped all of the characters into a 'new' city, similar enough to the old one to actually match the game premise again? characters keep cr and memories of the older city, but all of the godding over accessibility and the 'well a character was here five years ago and they made a generator so it still works right???' is flushed.

You could get a great event out of it and then have actual in-game consequences.

That's something I could get behind! I enjoy the setting as it is and have no problems keeping it that way, but I'm not super-duper attached to it and something new could also be interesting. My only real concern is keeping development/memories/CR; as long as that stays intact I'll go along with anything tbh.

What makes the rave so terrible but Kida's party I held earlier okay? Nobody's complained about that, or any party we've held in the past. Is it really just the use of generators? Because if it is, it'd be really easy to suggest that the mods hold some sort of event or even an accidental happening that shorts them all.

i can't speak for other anons but to me kida's post was far less obtrusive. it felt like a community good in the game. come and meet your neighbors and maybe get some food if you're hungry! i assumed kida had foraged for all the food or stocked up and that the karaoke was either without equipment or some horrible busted up machine. there was one thread. i didn't see you plurk about it what felt like a billion times because no one was biting. it was a very friendly party for lack of any other term.

the rave has the generator and that is part of the problem yes. but it feels like it was described on some massive scale. there's all these lights! a full dj system! speakers! it didn't sound kind of like the crappy party you'd have to have in the setting. it sounded like going clubbing.

tldr? i think it would have been ok had it been presented in a more low key way with more emphasis on the fact that there was really shit equipment. because a neighborhood block party is sweet and feasible and a way for people to get together and maybe some hungry people to get some food. a rave and using a generator just for that and offering nothing that appeals to a lot of people is selfish ic and attention grabbing ooc.

forgive me if i have details wrong, i dont pay much attention to kida

all parties/dances/whatever make me sideeye a little but what makes the rave especially bad is how much more involved it is than just a party. parties are pretty much 'theres a pile of food here and some not-dirty water here, maybe some lemonade if youre super lucky, watch the staircase its really water damaged and might break under you'

the rave has strobe lights, turntables (meaning intact wood, vinyls that actually play music and god knows what else that goes into making a turntable are you kidding me), three! computers! that the character totally found the pieces to and made, handwaved generators (iirc there have only been a few generators in ads since its creation), different colored intact glass for crazy lights, disco balls, and who the fuck knows what else. okay maybe your character found all that shit oh wait how long has alex been in the game and how long has he actually been looking for things to make this stuff? i could see him working for a long ass time on it but he hasnt. the first i heard of the rave was maybe last month or so.

then again this is alex we're talking about so it doesnt really surprise me at all

to me it is also wasting resources with how much resources the character also has. all that glass could be put into good use along with the electronics computers. all that electricity being funneled for this stuff can be used to charge someone's home or the lights can provide a light for people.

I personally (not to say that you're wrong objectively) would argue that that breaks the ic/ooc barrier.

I think someone mentioned that they wanted more characters to call this character out, and that's fine! Contact the player and set something up. I at least would love to play out a bunch of kids wasting resources being called on it. I know Kida regularly wastes alcohol and has occasionally encouraged Duo to steal some for their irresponsible nights out.

Even saying that you feel a character should have used their resources differently is a-okay.

The thing is, if you throw a bunch of irresponsible characters together, icly they're going to be irresponsible with what you give them. When you start oocly trying to say that irresponsible characters should not act irresponsible, then I'm the one who's going to break out my emote collection.

I don't know everything about the character in question! Feel free to correct me if I'm misunderstanding something. I will back off gracefully. I also agree that having so many resources at one character's disposal (if the character is utilizing all of the things listed) is questionable. But if the problem is really how the resources are being used, I think that is something that should be handled icly, as it was an ic decision to use the resources that way.

um. i understand you want to defend your friend and everything and that's nice. but did you see the fit she threw at the vriska player? did you see her accusing that player of posting about her anonymously and causing drama? when it was all ic because anyone who isn't stupid knows vriska is a complete troll?

it's one thing to say it should be ic. i agree with you. but alex's player did not want any negative fall out from this thing. she didn't want anyone pointing out how fucking stupid the entire thing was. when someone did? she exploded at them and behaved like a spoiled child.

if she had welcomed negative cr from this and planned for some people to disagree with the resource wasting ic, i would think the rave was a wonderful plot. i would admire her for setting up a chance for negative cr. it's a chance to really make other characters think.

but she didn't. she wanted everyone to drink and act ridiculous and wanted all the ass pats because zomg rave! then she took it ooc when someone called her on it ic. like a previous anon said, no one wants to deal with that bullshit. most people who disagree are ignoring the thread and her because we don't want her starting her own pity party against our characters.

Actually, I didn't see any of this. I saw the Vriska player's plurk about not meaning to cause any problems, and I completely believe them. Nothing before that or after. I miss out on a lot of ooc problems, especially if it's not right in my front yard (i.e. displayed openly on rpanons or wankgate).

If there's much more to it than that, then I'm missing a lot of info that no one's mentioned to me as being the problem. If player attitude is a huge factor, that's definitely something that should be addressed and mentioned to a mod, if it hasn't been already.

I can understand not wanting negative consequences for something that was intended to be fun, but if the player is throwing fits over it and accusing people with no proof, then that's the real ooc problem.

Woah, woah, woah. I know I said on plurk that I wasn't going to comment here logged in, but I want to clear this up here: I never said the PM came from the player in question, and it was far from an explosion or a fit. I don't really feel comfortable copying and pasting the text of the PM here without the consent of the sender, but it was perfectly polite and reasonable, and when I told them that I honestly hadn't meant any OOC/IC line-breakage they said okay and apologized (and I don't even think an apology was necessary; like I said, it was a concern, not an accusation).
