AU Reincarnation game

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So, this was something I've been working on for a while but didn't want to say anything about until I've gotten more of the plot and FAQ written out. I realize that there's Save the Earth now, but it's sort of different from what my vision for the game I'm making looks like so I might keep trucking along with this. (Though I admit it's kind of a relief to see that someone else thought a reincarnation game is a workable idea.)

It'll be loosely inspired by Kumeta Natsuo's Bokura no Kiseki (http://mangafox.me/manga/bokura_no_kiseki/). And I say inspired and not based on because I'm just borrowing elements (like the magic system, names of the countries, etc.) from the series which is unfinished. Basically the plot revolves around a bunch of students who regain memories of a past life in magical kingdom that was completely obliterated and no one knows why (which will be the bases of the plot for the game).

In the game There will be gaps in their memories but the characters in the game will regain their memories early on in the game in such a way so that they remember being that person. Power regains will be limited in the present due to lack of stamina and, as previously mentioned, things they can't remember.

There will also be a "network" of sorts that's only text and is basically a social media site in its beta testing phase, which will explain why only the PCs have access to it since they would have been invited to beta test it.

At the same time, there will be a separate comm that's set in the past so you could play out the events leading to the catastrophe that will be repeated in the present at endgame.

It will be a fully AU game that moves towards an endgame that will be tentatively set a year and a half to two years after the game opens.

I want the game's focus to be on discovering what happened in the past and letting player decide how their characters will deal with the fact that they now have memories of two different lives in their heads.

The characters' past life should be closest to canon in upbringing, powers and everything else. In the present, however, players will have the choice of playing their character at a different age or even having them reincarnated as a different gender in keeping with the source material which had a princess that was reincarnated as a boy.

There's still a lot of world building to do (which may or may not be affected by how the next chapters of the manga takes the characters) so it'll probably be a while before I get everything ironed out and the game is ready to open.

The question I wonder about though is whether or not this would be far too complicated for a game! I have an idea for how to simplify the app so that it won't require everyone to write two history and personality sections. Also, I can't decide where to set the part of the game that's set in the present day. I'm still trying to decide between making up a name for the city and not specifying where it is, just picking a real place at random, or just picking a real place then replacing one letter in everything's name. (So for example, if I set it in America it would be Comerica or something. Yes, I totally did just borrow that from Zettai Karen Children.)

Sav the Earth is just starting up and it's a reincarnation game so... Maybe check to see that it's not too similar?

I already have and as I mentioned it's not really what I envisioned.

For one thing, Save theEarth isn't fully AU which is something I want so that you could have things like character A and character B (both from a different series) were mortal enemies in the past and buddies in the present.

Another difference I think is that in Save the Earth characters are 'reformatted' to become their past selves whereas I want a game where they clearly remember being two people and the conflict that could arise from that. (Unless I've horribly misread what the game's premise meant...)

Also, the manga I'm basing it on isn't really about saving the world (though there will be aspects of it) it's about getting closure and finding out what happened to cut all their lives short in the past and eventually when it becomes clear that it's happening again to prevent it.

Save the Earth is a fabulous game and I might app there myself, but I still want to go ahead with this because Save the Earth isn't exactly the AU Reincarnation game I had in mind when I wanted to make one.

If it helps, I don't think our ideas are that similar. Really it seems the only thing they have in common is reincarnation and regaining memories/abilities.

You and I must really think alike though because I really like the idea of two separate comms for different time periods and started working on a game based around that idea myself a while back. Hmmm.

Anyway, I think it's a cool idea. I'd probably app there.

Haha, I didn't think so either. It's kind of like how different sex games have the smut in common but are still different games.

And I guess either you posted this in your sleep or it's just that great minds think a like. ;3

Depending on how my schedule looks next term, I might app to Save the Earth too. Provided that RL doesn't completely kill me, anyway.
