Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

I've heard this game is not particularly friendly to newbies. Is that true? I'm not trying to cause waves here, because I actually do want to app, I've just had people "warning" me about the OOC atmosphere and I'm hoping it isn't true.

It is literally no different from any other game I've, personally, ever been in, nonnie. There are people who are super friendly and people who are more aloof, but the game has a very high contingent of rectally despondent people who will take every opportunity to tell you how awful it is.

I suppose YMMV but I've been there six months now and I've found it to be one of the friendliest games I've ever been in.

gonna repeat what everyone else has said, but I had no problem joining this game a few months back without knowing anyone. the best advice would be just to put yourself out there, go find people you want to have cr with and reach out to them rather than waiting for people to come to you.

everyone I've talked with is extremely friendly but also extremely busy, so they don't really have time to go and personally welcome every single newbie who shows up. as long as you're willing to put yourself out there, though, you can get some great interactions and cr going.

oocly friendly? sure

icly getting cr? no way in hell

considering apping an oc here next round. are they generally well received?

OCs in my opinion integrate into the game just as well as canon characters. I can't generally tell the difference, and don't bother to check which is which. That said, a few OCs have crashed and burned here because they were played as inconsistent show boaters, or because they were literally playing a boat.

If you're prepared to work hard but don't have to be the center of attention you can do well, but if you deliberately draw all the attention onto yourself and don't play consistently, people will notice and call you out for it.

Write a good app that shows everything there is to know about your OC. Put anything that's in your head onto paper, because that app will be what people judge you against. Be consistent, don't be a diva, and you'll probably thoroughly enjoy playing an OC in this game. It's a good, welcoming environment for them with a strong OC presence already, so it's not as though you're apping an OC blind into a game where you'll be singled out.

I joined this game with an OC and played them long before I app'd a canon character, and I've always been treated well. Just take everything the above anon said to heart and you'll be good. Contrary to what bitter anons may say, there are plenty of us here who DO love having OCs in the game. ♥

OCs are treated well here, provided you're willing to put the effort into them that they need. Make sure you've developed them well, understand their motivations, and play them for who they are rather than to fill a specific role on the ship or to get certain reactions out of people. Keeping the setting in mind helps.

I've never seen characters shunned specifically for being OCs, but bad characterization or being an unreliable tagger is going to come back and bite you in the ass, whether you play an OC or a fandom character.

I'm hoping that the person who reserved James Vega this time around is more active and sticks with the game. I was sad to see the last one go so soon.

That's a lot of hope, especially with that Shepard.

the chances of anyone apping into that cast now are nonexistant

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
why?

I wouldn't want to app into a cast with a known plagiarist. I didn't see plagiarism this time, but the history of it makes me go o_O.

She was permabanned from another game for copying text from the Mass Effect Codex in an app.
