i mean ectokids related to bro rather than one that was both related and raised directly by him ie:dave. my phrasing kind of sucked there but that's what i get for trying to type something up right after a nap, haha.

but yeah, i'm glad it's not just me. i've seen stuff like that in some games and it kind of made me side-eye a little.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
the dude also was not the best guardian. there was literally no food in that house but there were weapons everywhere and he seemed to spend a lot of time sort of messing with dave.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao yes. not to mention they're apparently millionaires and living in an apartment with no air conditioning. i love bro and i'm sure he tried to prepare dave in what he thought was the best way but father of the year he's not.

yeaaah. to be honest the fatherly bro routine always throws me off a bit too. i agree he tried, but the father of the year thing is a definite ooc bit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
yeah. i was kind of wondering if i was the only one bugged by that sort of thing since friends of mine are always sharing links with bros in their game getting all up in like, dating business and stuff and it always seemed weird to me.

(the kids' dating business I mean)

(bro can date all he wants)

ayrt still

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
no, I find it a bit awkward. Bro was always a mysterious enigma character (or rather that seemed to be what he wanted to be seen as) and to be honest didn't strike me as someone who would really get that involved in the dating business of the kids. i could see him giving dave a hard time about it maybe, but not in the protective sense so much as the dude basically trolled dave throughout his childhood and why stop now.

but it's weird to see him doing that sort of thing in an "i must be a good father" sense, and particularly in regards to roses.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, absolutely. do we know if the guardians are even aware they're genetically related to their charges? i mean either way i just find it odd for bro to be wanting that sort of relationship with rose when he doesn't even cultivate it with dave.

on the other hand he would totally be that douche older brother who covered his little bro's bed with beanie babies or barbies or some shit if he knew he was bringing a girl home. i want to see more of that in rp, not looming overprotective are you good enough for my ectospawn interrogations.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
it's never been confirmed, i don't think, but most guardian players assume a level of knowledge about the game beyond what the kids have, from what i've seen. i wouldn't mind seeing him come around to that sort of relationship with dave and then someone else maybe, but i don't think i've ever seen their relationship played out as something to address or change.

is there a game in particular where you're seeing this? i've seen it once or twice, so i'm curious now.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
that's really too bad. i think that kind of bumpy ride to an actual semi-normal relationship in a place where they don't have fiery death hanging over them would be a lot of fun to play around with.

there is, but i'd prefer not to bring it up since i'm not in it and the cast there seems to be having fun with the way things are going. not here to harsh anyone's buzz even if it's a odd/wrongish way to be doing it, haha.

I'm pretty sure I know exactly which game you're talking about, but let me just applaud you for not namedropping them.

Even if you aren't in the game though, I'm sure the Bro player would appreciate hearing some crit about this. Especially since you're so calm and reasonable about it. If it's already popping up here, chances are it's going to come back worse in the future. Because you're right, the way the mun is handling it is definitely odd.

aw, thank you anon. i'm not here to drag anybody through the mud, especially when it's easy enough to discuss my silly problems without naming names.

mmm, i might do that! since it seems that i'm not the only one taking issue with their approach and it's better for them to hear about it now rather than after it becomes entrenched and something they can't really rectify. my only real difficulty would be gathering up threads to use as evidence (and the fact i am balls at critting) but that can be solved by blocking out a little free time to go thread-diving.

i probably will, now that i think about it. easiest way to solve a pet peeve is to say something about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, I totally understand the balls at critting thing. That's part of the reason I haven't said anything myself yet.

Again, if it's the Bro I'm thinking of, I can think of a few threads off the top of my head that are prime examples but I'm hesitant to say too much here. You shouldn't have to dive too deep though because most of the threads you're looking for happened this month and only on castmate posts. Actually, now that I think about it, most of them were made on ic voicemail posts.

I might end up saying something as well if I can figure out a way to word it that doesn't come off as super dickish. You are an inspiration, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
haha yeah, crit is really goddamn hard to phrase correctly even when you know exactly what you have an issue with.

i've pretty much just been trawling his posts + posts of other castmates close to the issue and voicemail posts of them all and pulling out threads that seem relevant for referencing so it's good to hear that that's basically going to cover things. like i said i'm not in the game and don't follow it particularly closely, so this is kind of difficult for me.

you should, anon! more voices help reinforce that it's something they should consider and also you might grab onto something i miss with my own crit. no citizen, i'm merely doing my job.

hi i'm obviously a bro player and i appreciate reading these things. it sort of reminds me to hold back on the whole watching over dave type of thing and give him more of a sibling rivalry with dave cause i personally think that is what it should be.

but in defense as to how i play him, i typically have him seem overprotective or smothering dave in a way to embarrass him. i'm not sure if other bros do this, but i know that's my method behind his madness. he's a shit guardian, or should be, but he thinks he's doing a good job at what he does.

and for having game knowledge, bro was carrying shades with him when dave fell from the meteor, like he was expecting it to happen, and all of that strifing is training since he knows dave is going to be relevant in the game session. it's really hard to sort of draw the line as to how much the guardians know, but i think bro knows the most.

again, thanks guys for discussing bro and there's my two cents on the matter of things, even if these comments were directed at other players. it's a good refresher.
if anybody has seen any of my threads and have concrit, i have a HMD open.

nayrt (but i am the anon above your comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
this was actually not done with you in mind, but i'm glad our little back and forth could help you! homestuck is such a clusterfuck of a canon that it's easy to forget stuff even when you're rping it haha.

but yeah, that sort of overprotectiveness is totally fine since it falls into the messing around with dave's head sort of stuff that he seems to perpetually be doing. we were talking more about genuine shotgun cocking sort of dad type stuff if that makes any sense.

ugh figuring out what guardians know is such a pain in the ass. it's like ok some of them knew they were coming but did they know they were ectorelated and how much of the game did they really know about? drives me nuts and i don't even play bro, haha. but yeah, all things considered he's probably up there in terms of knowledge excepting maybe grandpa or something.

...man, it's nice to see so many people hopping in to talk in this thread. it's been so long since we've had any kind of discussion go around.

yeah ive been waiting for a guardian chat thread for awhile so i had to hop in and i didn't really want to go on anon so i could drop my HMD here if need be.
i mean, i think bro loves and cares for dave, certainly. but he's got weird issues with taking care of him properly and likes to get him to emotionally react by provoking him like a sibling more than a father figure.

you can't go too hard on the training or messing with dave though to where it's abusive cause i don't agree with that.
all the strifing stuff is mutual understanding.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
yeah there's a middle ground that's kind of difficult to find if you're not really looking for it since bro's not exactly plentiful on the motivation/characterization stuff as compared to some other characters. it's easy to kind of fall too far one way or the other because of that.

i think that would be a lot of fun to play around with, too. hopefully someday it happens.

and i'll plus one the above anon.

homestuck's a big fandom, so maybe we'll get lucky! i've got my fingers crossed at least.

haha you guys are so cute tonight. ty as well.
