Quondam, anon.

But I'll consider that anyway.

DA here, seconding that 'Quondam' sounds really weird. If it's in the east coast of the US, cities tend to be named either by the (usually British) person who founded them, a saint, or their native name.

May I ask how you came up with it?

It's an almost defunct word that means 'of an earlier time.' I was originally going to have a history of the city that was all about how it used to be a different city that mysteriously vanished off the map and was rebuilt as it once was, a 'quondam city', and the name stuck in universe.

But then I decided that was a bit too out there for the ordinary history setting but I didn't really think about changing the name.

I'm a nerd for obscure words, whoops.

Proooobably too out there for regular-world history. (Then again, one of Canada's proposed names was 'Borealia', w2g england...) I'd suggest changing it to a NYC expy, personally.

This has been pretty helpful because I'm English myself and as you can see we're all dreadful at naming places apparently. I'll give this some serious thought.

Different anon! Agreed with the anon below that this setting looks kind of amazing, but that name is just asking for tasteless jokes. :(

WOW WOW WOW I REALLY LIKE THIS IDEA/SETTING.

Okay, time to pitch in my two cents of advice:

"Some things I will ask players to stick to, such as for at least the first ‘season’ I want them to hide the truth from the public"
Instead of just asking, why not use the setting to offer a sound reason not to come out with the truth? Maybe there's something set in place that literally prevents the characters from outing themselves. Maybe, just as memories can be lost temporarily for hiatuses, any time a character tries to out themselves, everyone forgets the next day.

Seasons
Make sure that it will be easy for characters who app in later to blend in! In other words, someone who apps in during the third season should be able to get by with a quick summary of the first and second season - not extensive studying and reading.

Thanks for the input, anon. Glad you like it.

As for the not outing themselves idea, I'd really rather have it be a character thing. I want there to be a tension and effort put into keeping the secret. It also allows for plots that specifically revolve around the idea of that, like what to do if someone finds out who might expose them etc. I know it does restrict some characters from being reasonably applied for, but I'm of the opinion that a little compromise could make a better game all around. Different seasons will be more or less suitable for different characters.

On your second point that's something I've been considering and my current plan is just as you suggested; a summary of each season will be added, probably just a couple of paragraphs but with links to all the major occurrences too in case they do want to read into it.

There should really be a concrete reason for the characters to keep their abilities secret, in my opinion. Even if it's an investigator from the real world hunting them down or something, like the situation in Death Note. People don't just keep secrets because they can. At least, most of them don't. To play characters realistically there needs to be a threat first and then the secrecy can be a reaction. Otherwise it's just players keeping their characters quiet, which is ooc/ic territory imo.

I do get what you mean and I've always planned to have a reason, but it wouldn't be a game mechanic. There'd be no magic hand holding their tongue or whatever, which is why I've been saying to not apply characters that can't be convinced to keep the secret, since there are types who when a logical reason come up would just do it anyway.

I have been considering this and it's funny you should mention an investigator, since I was planning to have it made fairly obvious that although it's a secret, police/journalists/what have you will still be picking up that something is going on but won't be really capable of telling the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. So basically it requires characters to decide to keep the secret for the first few plots out of caution (the classic 'no one will believe our story' or 'the military will dissect us' excuses) and then out of necessity after that.

This is all just throwing ideas around still but I'm glad I get to do it, so keep the input coming.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-28 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So then would characters still be able to tell those close to them? Because the the "no one would believe our story" thing doesn't work with those you trust must. Especially important because I'm pretty sure most people would feel the need to talk to someone about such a big life change as finding out you used to be someone else.

Yeah, actually. I thought about that and decided that some characters would at least tell their spouse or parents or best buddy, even if I suspect most will take their talking from others in the same position. It's on the FAQ, 4th from the bottom.

I'm willing to bet players could come up with cool stuff from that, like their wife leaving them or something.

This game is exactly what I've been looking for for my character. That's really all I have to say.

Glad you're interested, anon. Hopefully it'll have the kinks worked out to open apps sometime next month.

UPDATE!

[personal profile] theearth 2013-02-28 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
We now have a rules page. It's basically the same rules you've seen in every game so I made them pretty small, plus two that are actually relevant to the game.

Things I'm working on-

Activity check: I'm thinking something simple. A few sentences about what they've been up to in the month with relevant links. I'm not sure if I want to have hard and fast AC requirements and instead measure if the character is actually doing anything in the game or if I should have specifics to make life easier all around. It would probably be based on a number of threads instead of individual comments. Not necessary to make a post.

City name: Still having a hard time on this one. I'm a bit tempted to leave it as is and be fine with characters ICly make condom jokes. Place names are dumb sometimes. It's that or Daviesburg or Locke City.

Mods: At present, it's just me. I think I can handle it for a little while, but I know for a fact I couldn't do it alone forever. I'm thinking I go it alone for two months then open applications for help. But if someone wants to assist from the start, go ahead and contact me on this journal and we might be able to work something out.
