someone want to explain those fics to me? i've heard the general idea, giant fics with like a thousand authors or whatever, but what's the general plot of these things and why do i hear about them everywhere?

because for whatever reason they're both immensely popular within a certain subset of fandom, who also happen to be editors at TvTropes and they get spread around.

Shinji and Warhammer 40,000 is just shit. it basically predicates that shinji discovers the relatively popular tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000 and then... he talks to characters from that verse in his head or something as a coping mechanism and use it to become a MAN and win everything forever or something.

Nobody Dies takes what could be an interesting premise (basically, none of the adults surrounding the pilots pasts actually die) and then ruins it with dodgy characterization and a love of tropes and cliche. asuka becomes a hideously abused wallflower, rei is an over the top genki girl with eldritch superpowers (and apparently her clones are common knowledge or something), shinji - uh, well shinji is just kinda bland.

it goes on for god knows how many chapters and is incredibly convoluted, enough so to the point that the author has his own take on rebuild now.

so they're basically your basic fanfiction fare, they're just hideously popular for some weird reason.
