[D] Free space

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

I'm a little mad at myself for somehow never having gotten into a decades-old extremely famous musical full of heart-stirring songs of social rebellion before I saw the movie 3 days ago. Is there a complete filmed version of the show I can find anywhere, legally or not-legally, aside from the two anniversary concerts? Those are great, but they're not complete enough for my anal-retentiveness.

Not pro, but this school production (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNFWlljOURM) is exceptional, and as complete as the school edition is. It's honestly better than a handful of pro productions I *have* seen.

There is a bootleg of the international tour cast out there, but it is the shittiest quality ever. you really can't see or hear what's going on.

so, is there a cast anywhere?

In the past, I've seen characters scattered here and there, but no solid casts. Les Mis seems like a difficult canon for fostering a 'cast.' Most of the characters work really well standalone.

Random thought, but would anyone be interested in, like--a little RPers canon discussion comm? I know at least myself and one other RPer are just embarking on reading the Brick for the first time, and others seem to be rereading it.

Not an RPers discussion comm, but abaisse forums have been used in the past as a platform for fandom talk and research.

http://abaisse.the-barricade.net/

A separate geared-for-RPers comm for book talk, movie talk, musical talk, and research could be a lot of fun, if there was enough interest. Anyone who would like to RP from LM might be a little daunted by period-appropriate research, and a single 'updated' and modern resources can be a great help. I'm not sure if there will be too many people who'd come around, though, since I don't anticipate that Les Mis will explode like some other films or canons do.

Yeah, I'd start one but I'm concerned, like you said, that there wouldn't be enough traffic to sustain it. Hm. And thanks for the link! The research *is* daunting. Interesting, but daunting.

Am I the only one who didn't hate Russell Crowe in the movie? I am well aware that he is not anywhere near as vocally strong as past Javerts, or even most of his castmates, but I thought that he played the character extremely well. And his singing wasn't bad. I wouldn't be putting him on Broadway any time soon, but I thought he was good enough.

I thought Russell Crowe was fine, but not exceptional. I really like that he captured how Javert is not a villain, but a misguided man with erroneous beliefs. However, I thought his performance was a tad too subtle to suit the character. Javert is meant to be extremely intense and driven, and his presence should have the power to command a room. I was missing that conviction and intensity in his performance, especially when it came to Stars or his suicide. My impression was that he was so focused on trying to sing it properly that he missed that piece in his actual acting.

TL;DR I had absolutely no problem with his singing and he was in fine voice for the role. He did a decent job overall, but I found myself wishing he was more intense and had a bit more conviction in his performance.

+1

Pretty much all of this. He also sounded like he was singing through a yawn constantly, which was a bit distracting.

Yeah, IDK. I don't get how people DON'T see him as intimidating. Maybe it's because I was in a huge theater with a larger screen than is normal, but I was shrinking in my seat. And man, how he didn't even flinch and instead pushed Valjean back with words was intense.
