Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. It doesn't look like DW can handle 5,000 comment entries at the moment so please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

I'm not even a shipper, but please take your heteronormativity and go fuck yourself with it. Hard. Since it's rare that any of these characters show any preference whatsoever, people are pretty much free to interpret relationships as they please. If it causes you a problem, don't tag them. Plain and simple.

Oh, and go back to Tumblr. You're obvious.

I was going to ignore the responses, but I'd just like to say that you've confused me for someone else. I don't have a tumblr, and to be truthful, I find them kind of confusing.

Anyway, interpretation is one thing, and it's a fine thing, but treating said interpretation as canon and even law, as many in these YGO fandoms tend to do, is something else entirely, which is more where my issue is.

If you want to have them be homosexual, have them be, but I'm saying make it believable; don't have it as if they've always been, always been in these relationships, and it's just now only showing in RP when, as you yourself say, it's up in the air with a good deal of characters. In some cases it can even NOT be up in the air but people will still assume.

GX fans especially are atrocious with this, a great deal of them (that I've been in contact with, to appease below anon) tending to say most of the male characters are canonly homosexual.

I apologize if I've offended or insulted, but this is something a great deal of players have a problem with.

Oh, we're complaining about this again.

I have a sneaking feeling you're exaggerating that the GX fans you've been in contact with think the male characters can only be homosexual and nothing else. I've never seen a single GX or 5D's fan I'm in contact with say any of the characters can only be gay EVER, and anyone who thinks they're straight is wrong and stupid.

You're basically rehashing the same old wanky song and dance that drives the rest of the fandom nuts. I don't understand why the sexualities people assign to their characters is something you should be so concerned with, anyway? If people choose to play them as gay or bi when playing from a non-romance series that, in almost every single case, the sexuality of a character is not set in stone, why is that such a horrible thing? What about the characters who've shown no interest in the opposite sex in canon, but who get thrust into het relationships? Is that as much of a mortal sin as it is to turn a sexually-ambiguous character a lower number on the Kinsey scale?

Now you're just trying to stir ship wank for no good reason, brosis.

Gonna break this down for you:

People are free to assume whatever they want because there is no canon sexuality for most of these characters. This does not default to heterosexual, it defaults to nothing. Non-sexual. Not asexual. No sexuality. If you're assuming a character is straight or asexual or homosexual based on non-sexual/non-romantic behaviors, you're stereotyping something fierce, and that makes you a douche. Why does it make you a douche? Because you are essentially asserting that a) sexuality is something that will always express itself in the character's personality and b) everyone is straight until proven otherwise. It is typically regarded as bigoted to harbor either of this erroneous assumptions.

So no, you can't say someone is "canon gay" if there's no canon to support it, but you can say that they're homosexual as part of your RP interpretation. People don't wake up one day and make this decision, either. So saying so-and-so has always known he was homosexual saves the player and everyone else the drama!! and THE ANGUISH!!!! of playing out so-and-so's struggles with his sexuality, which very few people will find interesting to RP alongside, and quite frankly, is horrifically OOC for the vast majority of the characters in the franchise. I've seen this RPed once and it was a fucking insulting and appropriative trainwreck, not to mention melodramatic and eyeroll-inducing.

ANYTHING to prevent instances of this, as long as it doesn't blatantly contradict canon, is cool with me.

Also the 5D's and GX fans you come into contact with =/= the majority/most/ and probably not "a great deal of players," because you know, I kinda know a lot of people in this fandom, either intimately or casually, and I'm not seeing this phenomenon express itself as a pattern. A few people here and there? Definitely, but most of them are DM players.

What it seems like to me - and what I think a lot of people are reacting to - is that it looks like you're basically trying to revive some pretty old wank that's mostly centered around one specific individual. Everyone's sick of this because she always has HMDs and constantly solicits criticism but gets nothing but vitriol and wank in return.

But to address something you said in another post-- why do you think some random RPers should care so much what people outside their game think? I know we're supposed to be open to crit, blah blah blah, and this is probably making me flagrantly obvious, but. I have no use for the opinions of someone who doesn't play with my characters, because ultimately, what's most important is whether everyone's having fun. I try to stay IC because this is roleplaying, but if someone were to approach me about one of my dudes with a quibble about their sexuality and included what you did in your first post, I'd thank them for their input and dismiss everything they said.
