Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. It doesn't look like DW can handle 5,000 comment entries at the moment so please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

I fucking hate this fandom. I know too many people. Too many people know me and too many people that are douches or circle-jerking cliques. But if I sockpuppet and pretend to be a newbie I get ignored.

This fandom used to be better years back.

Fuck everything.

You ain't alone in your frustration there, Anon. For a second I thought you were me and I wrote this while asleep or drunk or high or all of the above. This fandom's always been batshit but the cliquey douchery these days is so much more depressing and infuriating imo.

But if it makes any difference I'll try and keep an eye out for newbie-looking DGMers to poke and not ignore just in case you do sock it up, brosis.

Oh good I have twins. It's fucking depressing as anything because I love d.gray-man, just not the roleplaying fandom that it is.

You're awesome.

I imagine you've actually got triplets, quadruplets or octuplets floating around in this area, it's just that it's almost impossible to address directly because everyone's so fucking passive-aggressive and cliquey. But yeah, again I couldn't agree more.

Like you said to an anon below, it's sad and irritating to see that most players in the current RP pool actually don't seem interested in encouraging new blood at all, unless it's to help stroke their own egos, and that attitude really leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

/will keep watching the skies memes and whatnot especially closely now :) ♥

I'd actually love to see more newbies around in the RP scene--I love a lot of people, those I interact with and not. It's smaller than when I first joined so I guess it's just "fandom eventually puttering out" worry.

I did see some characters around with the DW move I couldn't recognize, though, and that got me excited.

Though I'm curious concerning the sockpuppeting: do you mean getting encouraged to games, getting tagged in open memes, etc?

Same; love to see more new people. But it's probably puttering out a little and not to mention viz's new bullshittery that'll make new chapters harder to get.

Yeah those and mostly in general. The fandom isn't eager for fresh meat. They prefer the jerky beef that's going around.

I'm sure other groups will pick it up and get spread to the main sites, but I don't think we'll get the same degree of quality, because that and their speed I think is what made them such a big issue--people didn't have any reason to get the magazine when they got timely, clean (better translated...) scans for free.

I think for things like open memes it's partially the style. It doesn't look like people actively tag around/search the meme as a whole (I admit doing this as they're low priority for me compared to other things, but I actually did scour a few times recently and hit up some people I've never played with before), so that is unfortunately probably a case where you have to make the extra effort. :(

But everywhere else... god, it's been a while since I've had castmates who are new to DGM RP (I have one now, but). And the DR's slowed down and a lot of people aren't tagging around as much for various reasons, probably both cliquey and not. I don't really RP around D_M so I don't quite know what that's like.

I guess the best way to encourage newbie interaction is games? Or even starting casts of new people places would be really cool, but you'd have to gather up the players first. I'd imagine there's still some games where main characters aren't taken, and there's not so much a central JRP culture as there is large groupings of them? And I think these groups tend to get more focused on themselves being friends and castmates. Alternatively it'd be great to see actual character diversity--I know myself and others I know would be on people playing more side characters like white on rice.

Basically idk what to do I'm spouting off ideas. I really would like to see more new people, and more diversity in DGM characters played around the place. And I think that there's probably still a good portion of RPers who would like the same and be willing to tag at them (or be tagged by them), it's just the matter of means.

Actually, concerning memes and D_M stuff maybe we should have a thread in the canon thread where people can drop off links to their posts in D_M and open memes for other people? Kind puts you more in public than just on plurk but it's easier to find (although a larger portion of the fandom doesn't check anoncomm, I think, but there's obviously still some of us around!).

In many ways I think Plurk's been bad for the DGM roleplaying fandom. Makes it a lot harder for newbies to get into things. It's also a problem because it's not like everyone in the fandom is reading everybody's Plurk, so everything feels more narrow. Potential for discussions on this anoncomm are severely limited because many players don't read it regularly if at all.

Ideally I'd like a meme just for DGM roleplayers to use, so that we all know where to go for communication and don't have to hang around here fruitlessly. But that's not good for hooking in newbies either...

Re: na

I think another problem is a DR, which would generally be an easy place to wedge into the fandom without the hassle of apps and activity check in games, has gotten smaller, less active, and more inclusive (both from people just not tagging around and people just not being active and thus only tagging who they already know when they are). Open memes, while fun, just aren't well built for new interaction unless you seek it yourself.

And yeah, with plurk and anoncomm I think some of the discussion and advertizing and enabling of both the series and of RP has declined in the main fandom community, which was probably the biggest hook for newbies aside from personal enabling. I can't remember the last time I saw a game advertized there. Unfortunately it's not like you can just revert back to old ways, you have to adapt.

I think a general discussion meme could be good if you got it advertized around, though. Affiliate with the main comms, maybe have a directory of where you can find casts, where you can drop your open meme tags, where you can ask for advice and plot, etc. It'd need to be gotten really out there, but it could be a way to adapt. It seems kind of counter-intuitive to consolidate the fandom when the issue is inclusivity, but I think having an active, easily accessible open space for RPers of the series (or even just people who enjoy it otherwise) could encourage others to dip their feet into the water where they can easily track and talk about what's going on (plus RPers can be like enabling bloodhounds, which is both a good and bad thing).

(Anonymous) 2012-02-13 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
So in essence, the best way to gain more roleplayers could be from closing off a little by making a DGM specific meme, but providing an environment where fans of the series can easily get into the roleplaying side if they want to.

I like this idea a lot. What's good for the fandom in general is good for the roleplaying side of it too.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-13 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Something like that, yeah! Activity is key to fandom livelihood, and a place for discussion and planning and plotting and organizing could be a great way to encourage it. And what better pool to draw in roleplayers for the series than those that are already into it?

I think this fandom has always kind of sucked, tbh. Loads of catty, bitchy, passive aggressive, cliquey people who their shit don't stink. The people who circle jerk the hardest may change, but somehow the dynamic is always the same.

I get really sick of watching people fawn over one player like a bunch of fucking sheep, but it seems like that's this fandom's MO. Difference was that years ago there was at least more diversity in characters who were getting played.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this, unfortunately. I also think because the fandom is smaller it's way harder to ignore or avoid the e-dick-sucking circle and the person at the centre right now is just very happy to accept all the fawning.

op

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't really noticed people sucking at the dick of a certain anyone, but I notice various circlejerks.

Missing the days when every thing was new and I knew nothing about people.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-13 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Who are you talking about being at the center?

da

(Anonymous) 2012-02-13 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Moot point now that there's a new post I guess, but I think I know who the above anon meant and if I'm right I hope they won't get namedropped now or later. All that ever happens is that their army of whiteknights descends to derail everything and circle-jerk with each other about how this person and people they RP with can do no wrong. It's exactly this kind of shit that's wrong with this fandom.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2012-02-14 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
If that's the case, I might know who it is you mean. Could be a totally wrong guess even so, either your guess or my guess at what your guess is, but I know who I think of when I think of DGM whiteknights descending and circlejerking. And I'd agree that mentioning them by name is a bad idea.

But I wasn't aware they were the center of the whole DGM RP fandom's circlejerk. Guess I'm out of the loop.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I've been in a lot of fandoms over the years, I've been in DGM a long time, and I think it's always been far shittier than the average fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
i know what you mean and i wish i had some advice for you, brosis. love the manga, can't stand most of the fandom.

I like some people in this fandom a lot, and dislike some. I feel as if the problem right now is a lack of fresh meat and diversity. The fandom's getting smaller and more turned in on itself. Some games can have large DGM casts still, but they're often the same people and the same characters, playing with castmates they know like the back of their hand.

Cliquishness is the worst thing that can happen to a fandom that's having trouble getting new roleplayers. It's something we've got to watch out for.
