There are a lot of teens and twenty-somethings rping, but not many 30+. Is this just down to younger people generally having more time and usually more familiarity with computers, or is to do with maturity?

Do you ever think you'll 'grow out of' lj/dw rp? Are you planning to quit once you hit a certain age? TELL ME, ANONS.

22 here and I can already feel my enthusiasm waning. Like, I have a lot of fun in my game, but I'm so much less attentive about it. I can't handle fast games anymore because I just don't check them anymore. I have other hobbies, plus work.

I tag much slower too, which I don't like. It's not even that I have to think about the tags more, I just put them off like hell because I'm finding other things more interesting. RP used to be my main online hobby and now it's more like 50% of my free time. Or less.

But to answer your question, I don't know if I'll grow out of it completely. I'll just get slower and slower or something.

Oh for the days when I used to be able to play ten characters and keep up with them all.

I can only speak for myself, but as a 30+ RPer I find it hard to get into/stick with journal RPing because it tends to feel like such a time sink. I used to be fine with spending all of my free time RPing, but at some point I started feeling like I was chained to my computer and just wanted out. Nowadays I feel a mix of envy and agitation at RPers that are so into it that they drag their laptops to school or post on their phone at work just to "keep up."

I don't think I'll ever grow out of RPing itself (I still love this one forum RP I frequent and museboxing with friends), but I don't think LJ/DWRP will ever be "a thing" for me like it used to.

I love RPing as much as I did when I was a 20-something, but I have so many more responsibilities now that I have a hard time justifying spending more than a few minutes each day playing online.

Different 22-anon here. This is exactly what terrifies me about growing up.

There's plenty of 30-somethings who RP. They're just not on DW/LJ.

i'll probably "quit" when i get a steady job, as the field i'm going into will demand a lot more of my time than university (and being currently unemployed besides) does. i don't think it has much to do with maturity (maturity would dictate how/what you rp, if you wanted to put it in somewhere, because i don't think you'll find too many 30+ rpers playing like 12 year olds on deviantart please don't prove me wrong).

it really depends on what you're doing outside rp, i guess? i know some 30somethings who have very undemanding lifestyles, and some college students who barely have time for more than a few tags a week.

that said, i'm still outie when i have better things to waste my time on, rpers are drama queens.

I think it might be a mixture of both. I've got a few friends who grew up RPing, and they reached their 30s and just continue it because it was what they were used to.

I'm only 23 now, but I've been RPing for ten years. I've already learned how to work real life, from jobs to school and then some, around adminning, modding, and just playing in games. I'm actually not all that tech-savvy, especially when it comes to the new DW coding, but I have a feeling I'll just juggle this around future children and husband(s) (but hopefully just one husband) in the future.

I once played in a game where another player was 51. She had five children, one of which was 17 and played in the game with us. Apparently neither of them had a problem with it, and when they were having random mother-daughter bonding time, they would chat about plots together. They were actually really adorable.

I also used to RP with a guy who was half my age. He actually thought of me as a daughter, and our characters had a very father-daughter feel to them. After talking to both of them, and a good handful of others, I realized that RP isn't really a hobby I have to give up. I might choose to take a few breaks when I'm out of college and doing the whole career-and-family thing, but... I honestly think I'll be at it until I'm too old to juggle both.

Well I'm 30, and I feel like my writing has taken the 15 or so years of Rp under my belt to get to a point I am really proud of. I don't see it as something to outgrow so much as grow with.

30+ RPers do exist, they just aren't as common.

I do think a big part of it is the familiarity with computers and also the internet. I'm 33, and when I was in my teens like many RPers now are, all we had was dial up and very few people had that. And the internet wasn't anything like it is now, it was something nerds messed around with.

I do think as the years go on, there will be more 30+ RPers just because more people who have that familiarity with the net will start growing older. As far as me? Doubt I will ever grow out of it, maybe RP in a different form, but I've been RPing in some manner since I discovered the internet in high school.

This is me, except I'm 2 years older. I agree very much with the statement about players growing with the internet - I grew up knowing many traditional style dice and card-game RPers but that kind of medium was never for me. When the internet evolved to a point that I could RP in writing form (and a character I didn't have to develop myself) then I jumped on that as fast as I could.

I still know many DnD style RPers in their 40s and 50s who won't give up any time soon and I think it will be similar with us 30+ LJDW RPers. I've been doing it for 6 years now and I still love it, drama and all.

The only thing is that I have slowed down, like others have mentioned, and I have different priorities, so I appreciate slower games or even just musebox/meme tagging with friends.

25+ here and I've been roleplaying on journal-based communities for over five years now. I find that as I get older I have less time and less drive for journal-based rping. Sadly, I can't say much for the others because I no longer forum rp, but getting twenty tags out in a day is rough. Meanwhile a few years ago I could just tag for hours and never stop.

The 30+ online RPers these days are usually in things like MU*s, forums, and MMOs.

42 here (which probably makes me obvious to some folks).

For me, it's not so much 'familiarity' with computers (it's easy to learn new stuff if you just, you know, put the effort into learning), but just that I have less time due to real life responsibilities, and my interests have changed too as I've gotten older, which means what I'd want to play in rp has changed too. I used to be very big into video games/anime, and fluff--these days, I'm more into 'serious', live action, gritty things, which is not as common to find in LJ/DW rp. Still love the anime and things, just doesn't hold my interest as 'things to play' like it used to.

I don't think I'll ever grow out of it so much as my focus and preferences will continue to change.

30+ here, RP in one format or another has always been something I was into since I was a kid. I've bumped around between different formats over the years, looking for places that I could find what I like to play. Right now LJRP is the best fit - not perfect, but it works when I can find other people I'm sympatico with on an OOC level. Between all the younger people who mostly like to do silly cracky fluff it's a little like shotgunning birdshot into the air and hoping you hit something, but once I find people who have similar tastes and styles I hold on for the long run.

I think there are less people my age into RP because the internet wasn't as big or as widespread when we were young teens, especially not for roleplaying. Social media to RP isn't a very natural transition for us, I mostly stumbled on LJRP by hearing someone younger talk about it. But I know quite a few people my age who do tabletop gaming, LARP and email games.

If it's something you're inclined to enjoy I don't think it's something you just naturally "outgrow" unless you just get too busy for it like with any other hobby. Like the other anon mentioned people's tastes in what they want to play might change over time, though.

25+ here, I have an unusually large amount of free time right now, but that'll be changing soon.

I plan to continue RPing, even if I just do pressure-free museboxes/DRs/memes. It's just something I love, I can't see myself quitting entirely.
