Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

i think the over-reliance on prompts has totally stifled creativity in the dwrp community.

games used to have events that just gave an outline of what was happening, and each player would have to come up with unique hooks and prompts on their own to garner tags for their characters. nowadays, a game won't even take off unless there's a test drive meme with multiple scenarios and prompts to appeal to the widest possible audience and character roster.

obviously things weren't perfect back then, because "bobby joe is at the event, come bother him!" posts were a thing, but those are still a thing now, even with prompts. but now you get those, and also multiple posts in a row of different characters going through the exact same scenarios.

i also think this issue bleeds into why bakerstreet and other memecomms are desolate wastelands of empty toplevels, because we've conditioned ourselves to see memes as low-effort when compared to games. and because rewording a prompt to include your character's name in a game is already low-effort, empty level is the next logical step down. even tfln offers more in terms of creativity, even if all people are doing is stealing the first five texts they see on the website.

and i also think there's no way to ever address this as a community, because all you'll do is activate the legion of people who insist we're all too old and too busy to be creative in our creative writing hobby anymore, even though those same people are here instead of writing the tags they say they don't have time for.

you're absolutely correct, and this is one of the two reasons why dressing rooms are dead. the few times people tried to bring them back, there were lots of comments on the opening log, but then nobody would make posts.

sounds like you should switch to psls

i found this utterly baffling when i came back to journal rp after a ten year hiatus.

I remember being really happy with coming up with an unusual toplevel prompt for an event once (eg. it's a standard beach event, and my character started making sandals from palm fronds to give out to people to wear on the sand). Then no one tagged me and I had to go through all the toplevels going "wow, cool beach!" to find something to tag in lmao

But the silver lining is, sometimes people still do come up with interesting ideas and when you find an idea you click with it feels great. Creativity may be fading, but it's not dead!

+1 This essentially what happened to DWRP. Creativity gets ignored and shafted for something more “safe” and boring as prompts.

And forget getting tagged if you’re playing from a lesser known canon or OC. You literally have to tag out all the time because no one is willing to invest any interest in your character besides a few friends you know. It’s rather tragic how limiting rp is on here.

i play some pretty obscure characters and have never had trouble getting tag-ins on memes or in games. i'm not saying your experience isn't the norm, but i don't think it's universal or inevitable, either.

as will all things it depends on so many factors

one of mine who gets NO tags right now used to get plenty of tags last year because there were more compatible characters running around on memes. repeat cycle.

it definitely isn't. i've been playing 99% obscure characters for the past few years and haven't struggled at all to get cr with them.

I've been playing obscure characters most of my DWRP career and I've never struggled to build up CR with them, even the ones who can't communicate in conventional ways.

here comes the scheduled gaslighting, this time with vague personal accounts that aren’t the norm

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-11-04 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
the fact that you think this is actually gaslighting tells me you need to touch grass

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-11-04 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
"my experience hasn't been what you experienced" does not mean "this isn't happening to you"

however, you jumping to "i'm being gaslit!!!" lol. try being normal and friendly and don't let other players' less than perfect behavior faze you and you too can get cr with your obscure character or oc.

gaslighting requires prolonged emotional manipulation which requires a relationship

we don't know you like that

vague personal accounts that aren’t the norm

hate to break it to you, anon, but my current game has multiple obscure characters in it and last i checked, their posts and toplevels were getting plenty of tags

It kinda feels like you're the one trying to gaslight ayrt into believing they were gaslighting you

(Anonymous) 2025-11-04 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
bait used to be creative and believable

Re: UNPOPULAR DWRP OPINIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-11-03 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
you're right but i don't know what to do about it. i don't have the time or energy to do the amount of creative writing anymore that dwrp requires and i know i'm not the only one.

before i got burnt out and quit, my then-rp partner stopped doing psls with me because they were too demanding to plan and develop for him. we swapped to games as the alternative because they do the hard part (in his words).

putting aside the problems with the game, this was one of the draws of come sail away. it was a simple and straightforward setting, event descriptions were just a basic outline, and players mostly came up with their own prompts. felt very old school dwrp/ljrp.
