Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

nayrt but they said they like it because it reads like a script, which is a valid form of writing

sorry if you like prose but there's a reason why scripts and novels are completely different things

Yes, this! I understand you can write prose in present tense, and I do when it's what my thread partner prefers, but the brackets make it feel like a script or a screenplay, which is what I like. No shame on anyone else at all.

yeah, i'm fine with either so i don't have a problem doing prose if that's what my partner prefers. its really weird that some people are so hung up on how prose is the better one and therefore should be the standard.

there's a reason scripts/screenplays/treatments are formatted in that way and brackets is actually pretty close to it.

>there's a reason scripts/screenplays/treatments are formatted in that way and brackets is actually pretty close to it.

except we don't write like scripts. brackets tags and prose tags are exactly the same shit. one just happens to have html around it.

anon did you actually look at the examples linked

script treatments are basically prose with dialogue scenes sprinkled through it

(Anonymous) 2025-11-03 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
i did, i opened the link and found exactly the opposite of what you just said. it's mostly dialogue with the occasional paragraph to set the scene and a line here and there to indicate important actions. our tags have introspection and silly little movements, like saying that a character is fidgeting or running their hands through their hair.

people have a big misunderstanding of what "prose" means in the context of dwrp. it just means the format, as in all text in the same size and using "". that's it. we don't write like scripts and we don't write like novels either. this was already said in another comment, but this bullshit of novel vs script is what makes people think that asking for prose means you want more "serious" and longer tags.

rp shouldn't feel like script, and it shouldn't feel like a novel or fanfic either. it should feel like rp. not saying you can't get inspiration from scripts and novels since they do have *some* things in common, but rp is its own writing style with its own rules.

Nah man as a brackets tagger I write in brackets because they feel different to write, and I find it much easier to churn out tags in brackets than prose. Part of it is probably because my brain's adapted too much to brackets, but it is what it is. No amount of argument is going to change the fact that I have an easier and more enjoyable time writing in the specific format I'm used to.

I ask to reply in brackets because my prose tags take much slower to draft, often several redrafts before I'm satisfied vs a one and done if it had been brackets. I will switch to prose if asked and I do offer, but there's a reason it's second choice for me and it's more about what works best for me than any philosophy about formats.

your prose tags take longer to draft because you're one of the idiots who thinks prose requires more and can't be short, silly things

there's nothing that one format can do that the other can't. it's literally just visuals. you can do the same writing with both. all your issues are self imposed

(Anonymous) 2025-11-03 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
why do you care so much if people prefer brackets over prose if its just visuals

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2025-11-03 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
i don't care about the preference itself, use whatever you want, i just want to kill this stupid misconception that has been haunting us since LJ

sounds like it's something that's just all in your head anon

(Anonymous) 2025-11-03 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess you might be right!

I'm still going to write in my preferred format because this isn't my job and I'm doing this for fun

my prose tags take longer to draft because i have an easier time reading brackets. i have dyslexia and the different text size for description vs. dialogue makes it much easier for me to parse visually. i have to reread prose tags more often and more slowly to successfully check for errors. otherwise, i write both prose and brackets almost exactly the same.

that said, i normally offer prompts with both and i match style, it's nbd.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2025-11-03 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
that makes no sense. when you're drafting the tag, the text is all in the same size.

dunno about other anon, but i use comment preview very liberally, especially for proofreading.

i also refer to the other person's tag when i'm replying, so the formatting there makes a difference.
