[D] You dirty bird

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

General; code names without real names

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I can't remember ever seeing a code name being used only in a game and by the same token a real name used to replace it when canon doesn't have an official name to give out, so how would someone go about playing a character that is only known by a code name and nothing else?

1) kyon and his sister. we're never told their real names. i've seen kyon handled as "everyone calls me kyon" and i've done his sister as "my name's - [cut to description of something else happening in game]". kind of like how in code geass they silence out cc's real name.

2) depends on the reason for the code name. if they use a code name because they're paranoid or whatever they'd probably still use it.

Just use the codename? I've only seen this once in Route with their Cobra Commander, but it seems to work out okay.

What I usually do is avoid mentioning the fact that the name they're giving is a codename and make up excuses not to mention it when asked directly (ex. calling them by their real name would be weird since they're used to the code name, they think their real name sounds stupid/the code name sounds better, etc). You should also make it clear to people OOCly that your character doesn't have an actual name so they don't take the dodging as encouragement to keep pressing for it. Communication is always important!

And if it's a secret identity sort of thing then you can always say they use the codename out of habit/"just in case".

As someone who once played multiple characters who never had real names -- it really depends on the character.

One didn't remember theirs, so but because in-game they kept being pestered they gave a sort of code-name so people would stop asking.

Another one made up a false name but he was a villain-type -- after that was revealed he gave out his canon codename in a smug "my name is need-to-know basis and you don't need to know" sort of way.

But really, there's multiple ways to do it. Have the character say [ redacted ] or that they just prefer the codename or that everybody calls them that ANYWAY so it's what they respond to etc etc -

Usually if characters don't have a real name in canon it's for a reason. If the reason is real-world not ic, you can headcanon an ic reason maybe?
