Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

I hate that some characters that I like in canon are so boring to play against in RP. I wish there was even just one Jinx or Bucky or Gojo that didn't feel like a fucking chore to tag.

what makes them feel like a chore? i have never played nor tagged those characters, but i don't want to feel like a chore

da but power leveling and being repetitive, mostly. constantly one upping your guy or acting in a way designed to rile you up but it just leads to the exact same threads over and over again

i've been accidentally repetitive before, usually when i'm more focused on the most "ic" response instead of the most collaborative one. that's something for me to keep in mind

Some characters are fine in the context of their setting, where they fill a narrative role, and are just kinda there in panfandom stuff. Unless the player is sufficiently willing to explore how being outside of that context will impact them. Like, it's explicit Gojo’s personality is heavily influenced on being the strongest person in the world. Explore that when suddenly there are gods and monsters and superheroes and shit everywhere.

it requires 1) making extra concessions to make those characters more viable to play with in a game group setting and 2) a skilled player who is going to actually utilize those concessions in a way that makes them viable to play with.

lbr a lot of dwrpers are afraid of developing characters outside of their canon presentations, even a little.

people drawn to gojos and bakugos and jinxes tend to flanderize and flatten them into Their Craziness or Their Aggressiveness which is bad characterization, on top of being rigid in playing them. for these kinds of characters you have to not be afraid to adapt and flex in a game setting, or like another anon mentioned it's going to get really repetitive and boring and obnoxious to play off of real fast.

jinx is annoying to play off for most people because she's because a manic pixie girlfriend wannabe harley quinn with sister and daddy issues. making her less annoying in a game setting means letting her play with castmates to get different perspectives of what happened in canon events so she can grow beyond them. it takes a player willing to make jinx more well rounded outside of her Mental Illness(tm)

bucky idk i have limited personal experience but it maybe feels like rping against a brick wall who grunts two words at a time at you.

gojo is annoying to play off of because he's The Strongest and self-centered and abrasive and stupid god-like powers. making him less obnoxious to play with in a game means power nerfing him AND humbling him where he learns it's okay to not be The Strongest. even so i've seen it backfire where the player does a lot of telling and not showing like look how GREAT and HUMBLE he is now I DEVELOPED HIM (never threads anything out where he struggles or actually loses). i would not trust a gojo in a game with no power nerfing tbh, he's too exhausting to deal with.

i've rped a lot of one man armies and you gotta internalize that when you take them out of their canon they're no longer top dog. the power fantasy works in anime/manga and single player rpgs but it's not gonna work here because it's a collaborative hobby. not only are you gonna meet characters who have no idea yours is a living god, there's also characters who are not gonna give a shit, usually cause they can beat the shit out of yours. also everyone should get a chance at the limelight otherwise it's boring af

unfortunately i've found shonen heroes tend not to internalize this so unless otherwise noticed i tend to avoid them

nayrt

this is exactly why i play characters like that. it's fun to knock them down a peg or ten. i played an op shonen character a while back and power nerfing him was a lot of fun. it also opened up so many good doors for cr

I can’t stand Bucky because of games and this is what I’ve experienced like half a dozen times.

1. He’s often played as a “good misunderstood boy” and it makes players bristle when he gets any sort of pushback.
2. He’s an American military character from a military-sponsored film series. It’s unpopular in DWRP to depict that kind of good ol American war hero stuff, and most people don’t want to play out commentary on American politics, so people avoid it, shaving off one of the few things you could really dig into.
3. Most DWRPers also don’t know enough about the military to believably incorporate any of it into how he might operate in an environment with no chain of command and unpredictable allies. He never seems interested in applying his expertise because the player has none. He just bitches about how no one is as competent as he would be if they just left it to him.
4. He’s ostensibly a man born and raised in the first chunk of the 1900s but the depiction is so sanitized he never feels like a man out of time. What values he has are vague. No texture. He might as well be from 2050s.
5. Half his dialogue is slick quips and this is awful to RP with lol.

Not to mention there is a legit "Bucky Curse" in games and even bakerstreet where they are all played by squatters and flakes. In one game I was in, one finally dropped and literally the next app cycle were replaced by another one who was just as inactive as the first. There was a Steve in the game and I felt fucking sorry for them having a rotating cycle of his best friend but nothing to play off of because that game had gone through like four or five by that point.

It's hard to flesh out his character arc or even get an arc going at all when you're doing five tags a month or just do asinine OOC TFLN threads that also go nowhere.

I think throwing someone like Dazai at Gojo might get results, since Dazai just standing near Gojo would shut off Limitless(any ability touching Dazai gets nullified, which would instantly nerf any domain expansion.)

Then again, Dazai is another character most people can't play right.

I can only speak from my own experience but I feel like a lot of players that write those "strongest in the canon" characters rely heavily on this title and can barely make anything work cross canon wise. which is a bummer because I usually like such characters and would love to thread with them but it's like pulling teeth. I'm sure there are exceptions but I can't remember ever encountering a dazai/gojo/levi that could make cross canon work. even when writing a character that is also considered the best/strongest/smartest, the other equally amazing party always turned onto a one dimensional vegetable that could barely get a text conversation going.

inb4 it's me that sucks: also possible, but I doubt it since I get other cross canon cr just fine.

it's also a canon issue

if the canon is good they'll be plenty of examples of the strongest in canon interacting with others in a more casual, non-celebrity capacity. shonen is usually bad at this because it all hinges on high stakes and beating the current baddie, so they go all in on the mission and everyone's gotta look everyone cowboy tanaka's come to save us!

seinen however is more likely to explore the hero in a capacity beyond their powers and heroism so you get a better balance. same for single player rpgs. i have no problems getting crosscanon cr with one man armies from many rpgs since they have interiority their in-game missions involve more than just save the day and they have set personalities that make it easy to figure how they would think and react towards people and situations they would never encounter in their canon

tl;dr: they gotta have layers in their canon too
