I've got a journal for Hikaru that I'd really like to get some voice testing on! Although ngl I feel like I have a muse for Yoshiki too, so he might be next, haha

i am eyeing someone but i'm waiting to reread the manga before i settle. i have to make icons and everything which is why i always take a while to decide on who i want to write!

fave show of this season. it's definitely weird, but i am so glad toknow there are people here into it. would like to rp Hikaru someday. but i am only watching the anime as it comes out. i need to look into the manga.

i'm actually so mad at the anime's terrible pacing and weird decisions and all my friends' inabilities to listen to me when i say hey read the manga first it's a million times better

so if there are any anons out there questioning if they want to get into this series please read the manga first it's such an amazing eerie well-paced riveting read that the anime just absolutely cannot capture

speaking as someone going in anime first: i actually think they're doing fantastic with the cinematic eerie vibes, dw! the pace is simultaneously simmering but maintaining this underlying feeling of small-town claustrophobia. it's been a great ride so far

I thought the pacing is fine and pretty similar to the manga for him. The manga is creepier and does have better vibes but I think the anime translates it fairly well.

I do admit it's been a long time since I read the manga but I think for an introduction to the manga, the anime is just eerie enough to get people curious.

it's been my pet hyperfixation for a while and i've been collecting the books as they drop so i'm sure i have a strong bias, but

introducing tanaka's stuff ep1 is crazy to me. having an "outsider" from the town immediately present reduces that small town claustrophobia feeling that is the backbone of the entire series, and it leaves an extra bitter taste in my mouth knowing they (probably) did it to sell more merch. they also rearranged how we see the events of yoshiki discovering and confronting "hikaru" in a way that imo glazes over the depth of his loneliness and desperation to not lose him. i find it especially insulting to the viewer since it's even easier to follow in color than it is b&w.

there are just so many skillful tricks the manga pulls to make the art wild out uncomfortably. big, jagged text of yoshiki's anxiety and "hikaru"'s murderous intent or confusion over what it means to be human, hard-hitting panels behind a page turn...

idk man maybe i just love the manga too much that translating it onto the screen was doomed to be a disappointment, which i can admit, but i watched the first episode at AX hoping it was going to be a great experience and unfortunately every episode has fallen flat compared to the manga. i just wish people would give the manga a read before watching the anime, it's a quick read and you can enjoy both so why not

politely, i do think you are very biased. i'm not a huge anime person and i haven't read the manga or anything else about this series outside of coming across this thread right now, but i definitely have picked up the small town vibes, and yoshiki's anxiety and loneliness. i love some of the amazingly interesting art things they do in the anime, with perspective, strange colours, effects, and really effective jumpscares.

i watched one ep to try it out and was fully hooked in by the bland but startling way yoshiki confronted hikaru outside the store, and the Mystery Of Hamster Dude, so some of the stuff you're saying sucks is actively what worked for me as a new viewer.

anyway probably after the season has ended i will read the manga, which i did with dungeon meshi and it was rewarding.

i'm sorry that you haven't been able to find joy in a manga you love so much getting an anime though, that must suck. i've definitely been there with book series.

As someone who's been reading the manga since chapter 20, I don't really feel this way at all? I think the anime so far as been a triumph. Of course I have some nitpicks but that hardly means the anime is bad

i was intrigued by the trailer but i'm a horror weenie. how would you nonnies rate the creeping/existential dread of this show?

i'm a deeply desensitized horror veteran so i'm perhaps a bad person to ask, but i'd say fairly moderate. it's got a good sense of atmosphere and there was a recent scare that severely pinged the teenage version of me that was super traumatized by the grudge

otherwise it's mostly toxic yaoi, pining, and some soft body horror (and I get wigged out by body horror majorly, so this doesn't seem too bad)

i'd say, adjusting for my own level of desensitized to someone who is a horror newbie, probably like a 7/10
