Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. anon i don't know what your problem is but i do know you clearly aren't familiar with forgotten realms/dungeons and dragons if you think wizards of the coast would ever allow any of its properties to alienate its customers by making a decision like this

okay but you should know by now that only major, setting shaking events are canonized... and they also get retconned all the time. with that said, this character route is canon but this one is not isn't going to be one of those things set in stone because it gets in the way of player freedom and wotc are pretty anal about that sort of thing

...and the bg3 devs are on record stating durge isn't any more canon than tav

The Baldur's Gate series isn't like the Dragon Age series, where the previous game's events and hero are significant within the current one's in a way that's meant to be a pat on the back for a player who played the last game and shaped the world in the way they want.

BG2 came out in fucking 2000 and the characters who were carried over to BG3 were NPCs like Jaheira and Minsc (and Boo).

Unless you wanna start a fight about whether the Abdel Adrian in BG3 is meant to be Gorion's Ward as he was in the novels, but that's its own stupidity and has nothing to do with anyone's actual BG2 protags as played.

because when larian made divinity original sin 2, one of the complaints were that if you went with a custom original character you had basically 0 impact or background on the story. the companion playable origins would give you unique responses and interactions according to the character, so the custom character origin really felt lacking compared to them.

tav and durge origins were specifically designed with those complaints in mind. tav is meant to be more general and open ended malleable protagonist, and durge is essentially a more “canon” origin for someone wanting a more specific background and tie in to the plot, like the other companions.
