omg anon i have wanted this so bad i was putting together one of my own. i have never enjoyed or been good at bakerstreet type "individual meme" posts, i miss dressingrooms and sandboxes.

you can get a good sense for who is going to be a source of self-sustaining fun in this game

this is it and how apps should be done.

it's easy enough when you have clearly bad apps and oocness, but once you're down to the majority of okay and good apps, picking out the best ones becomes challenging because you're faced with having to compare different characters from different canons of different genres.

you can absolutely take what fits for the game you want to run, or take the apps of characters you'd enjoy tagging more, or employ a number of different criteria, but that's different from taking the best apps based on quality, which was what i interpreted the mods were after, based on their plurk comments.

ime both phenomenal and godawful apps generally represent outliers and most apps are average and similar in quality. you can start looking at other factors, like whether you have a good enough variety of characters, whether this character or that one would be a better fit for the game or facilitate plot progression more easily - but that's already moving away from choosing the best apps based on quality.

i mean tbf it's not exactly like the mods would baldly state that they're gonna pick who they want based on how fun they personally think an applicant would be in their game (not without setting off a flurry of wank anyway lol)

but lbr just because they don't say it doesn't mean they're not, in fact, going to end up factoring those things into what they mean by "quality". if i were them then at that point i probably would

i'd probably factor in things like how much people tagged around or kept threads going on the tdm, too. just factors of who would carry the game momentum the most for the first month. but honestly we're not gonna know the factors and it'll always vary game to game!

... is it different? Honestly asking here. You may be taking this too literally. Best apps can encompass what suits their game, the type of writing they want to cultivate (ecats vs heavier log-based), what types fit with their premise, etc. I'm sure they wouldn't fully detail everything they're looking for on plurk.

It comes down to selecting based on how quickly people slam in their apps when apps open or selecting based on quality which require reading them all and selecting 'the best' or the ones that resonate. It's typically the former these days (which I've always personally disliked but that's neither here nor there) which tends to be easier for mods since it's not up to them, just go by who was the quickest and as long as the app isn't horrendous that's that.

Sure, there will probably be a point where some apps are around the same level as far as quality goes. That doesn't mean that it's apples to oranges though. If I remember right they even said on plurk that if you don't get in it doesn't mean your app was bad. There has to be a line somewhere, 100 is already generous for a round.

that also makes me think they're new, to be honest, because a more experienced team would have publicly said they'd be picking the apps that show characters with the best mix of characterization and game suitability, to minimize the chance of wank afterward.

to be clear, i'm really not trying to put the mods down when i say i suspect they're new, nor do i have anything against new mods. i genuinely hope they get the game off the ground and have a good time running it. there are just some subtle tells that make me think they haven't done this before.

Current DWRP is so used to 'first come first serve, i know you'll accept what I shat out quickly as an app because it's passable, it doesn't matter how much I cared while working on it i got it in first' because that's been the status quo for years. It's become the standard even in capped games.

I also get the new mods sense but in a good way. They're changing it up and flexing what they're doing based on their bandwidth and they're trying to be fair from what I've seen. Shrugs. It's nice to see different.

it is different, imo! they said they'd take the best apps in terms of quality and referenced writing quality and characterization. adding in fit, suitability, outreach and suitability is absolutely fair, and they should curate the playerbase that best aligns with the game they want to run, but that's no longer exclusively picking out the apps of the best quality, as outlined in their plurks. again, i'm really not against their picking out the apps that they want or find the best based on a multitude of factors. i'm just saying that saying they'd pick the apps of the best characterization and writing quality to me hints they haven't reviewed apps in bulk before, and so i suspect they're new mods.

Alright, agree to disagree then! I don't personally see a difference and don't expect that much clarification when I don't need it but everyone has a different take.

I actually don't think you're wrong, I think they're on the newer end myself! My pov is mainly let's not take everything they may have noted on plurk to the letter, as we're all human and there's a good chance that while they're judging by characterization and examples that they're taking other elements into consideration as well (if only because that logically makes sense). And that it's not crazy to judge based on quality in general haha.

Also, it's plurk. It's meant for quick responses. Maybe a FAQ inquiry would've been better for harder specifics?

tbh i wouldn't even know what a phenomenal app looks like. Most apps (in general) to me look decent because they get the important points across. I'd only consider an app bad if it was unnecessarily wordy and hard to parse, or if it's too unintelligible to read.

Mods are going to have a hard time ranking, that's for sure.

i probably didn't articulate myself well in my original comment, but i don't think it's bad if it does turn out that they're new mods or anything like that. i just think they're new because imo a more experienced team would have gotten burned before and disclaimed they'd be picking apps based off characterization and writing quality as well as suitability and activity, both for practicality reasons and to avoid wank. that's just my personal interpretation!

but if they are new mods, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that in my book: new mods can bring fresh perspectives and ways of doing things, and i'm happy i threw my hat in the ring and apped either way.

If I don't get in, I'll tighten up my app and keep tagging the TDM. I've got amazing threads going on there, it'll tide me over until next month. Mods are doing a fantastic job, I hope they take the time to rest and take care of themselves.

I mean, on one hand: yes, and that's how I would handle being tagged once by someone who I didn't want to play with on a meme.

On the other hand, in the context of this thread, once someone has tagged you and been ignored enough times that you find it weird and off-putting that they're not getting the message, it's clearly time to send a "I'm not interested in playing with you, please don't tag me" PM. For whatever reason, they don't understand that, so direct communication is necessary.

tl;dr for anyone interested.

If you like crime thrillers with a touch of supernatural in it, "Fringe" is fantastic. It is 5 seasons long (96 episodes all together, each episode about 45 minutes), but the end of each season has it's own payoff that feels satisfying. Also the first season follows the formula of "most of the episode is dedicated to it's own specific mystery, and then there's 1 or 2 small details that tie into the overarching plot", so you can watch the first 3 or 4 episodes to see if you like it before continuing on.
