Once Upon a Time (It goes off the rails but honestly the quest for Snow to connect with Emma and Emma to connect with her son is kinda heartwarming at times. Lots of mom/daughter stuff between a lot of characters)

The hulu movie "run" is about a mom with munchausens by proxy and her daughter trying to escape her and her twisted obsession and codependency with her daughter, it was sooo good

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie (game, digital only) puts a decent amount of focus on the protag's relationship with her mother

Yellowjackets (tv show, Showtime), to an extent, touches on this with the character of Shauna

Cruella (movie, 2021) deals with a mother-daughter relationship as a major plot point

Encanto (movie) is grandmother-granddaughter, but since the grandmother is the matriarch and the family is mainly women, it might meet your prefs

It took me a long time to figure out this is where things kept going wrong with someone I used to play with in memes. They got frustrated with me for not using their character's internal narrative as a cheat sheet for juicy places to steer the thread, but I had been taught that doing that was infomodding.

I've been rewatching it as it airs on CBS and am getting inspired to pick up a character or two. I know there's no way in hell anybody's made icons of this show and am perfectly fine commissioning icons myself (however, if you have made icons, you're my new favorite person, please link them here!).

That being said, has anybody already capped this show?

Character Bio Tips

What do you look for in a character bio? What do you always include in yours? What are your formatting preferences? What are things you dislike seeing in character bio?

Just general character bio stuff.

I always want there to be a quick version right away, a paragraph that gives a synopsis of the most pertinent info. If a bio starts with 'x was born to y and z and their childhood was blah-blah-blah, yakkity-schmakkity' and it's a chore to find out who they are now, my interest wanes immediately. They should be built like character wiki articles. Open with a brief overview, separate the sections so the things that matter to a scene can be picked out easily and go in depth there.

I personally don't like bios that are spread over multiple pages or have too elaborate formatting. Making accessible and easy to search is more important.

format is irrelevant. don't care how the info is presented, just that it is and it's readable.

i don't like bios that fail to be concise and are a huge slog to get through. i am not looking for a complete profile of a character, but rather a basic overview so i can get a feel of how my character is going to perceive them.

love a set of stats and basic permissions.

generally when i toss up an info post for a new character journal it goes something like

basic stats: name, age & height (if canonly available or able to ballpark), canon & canonpoint

first impressions: one-sentence blurb on appearance/notable physical traits, one-to-two sentence blurb about their general vibes and demeanor at a glance

ic & ooc permissions: pretty much that template most ppl use where it goes down a list with simple y/n answers. deets about powers that might impact rp can go here (like mindreading or whatever). ship prefs also go here

extra notes: good spot for opt-out links, additional info links, any other things that might need mentioning but didn't fit in the above

since it's the first post most are gonna see in the journal i try to focus on laying out deets that people would find most helpful for rp, stuff they could use to flesh out tags in a first-encounter thread if they wanna. i keep it short and concise as i can. fiddling around with html tables can be fun but tbh even just a bullet point list is perfectly fine

imo there's nothing wrong with also wanting to get into the real fine details of your character's past+traits+Deal In Canon, but that can be bonus content on a separate post, something linked in the brief summary info post that people can click if they're curious about more. same deal with headcanons and other stuff.

what's the general thought around retagging people who have flaked/died off on threads in the past? obviously things happen, this is purely a hobby and i hold no grudges, but wasn't sure if i'm being a bother by retagging someone if they pop back up on memes weeks/months later
