Okay so. Just wondering since we have people RPing from DnD podcasts/streams and such what would the general thought on RPing characters from YouTube SMP RP series?

No go, as it errs a little too close to RPF? Or fine as long as one sticks to what has been presented in the lore/story videos?

it depends, are these actual characters with names separate from the gamers playing them? or is it a situation where they're playing a Minecraft version of themselves? if they created characters for the gameplay then I think it would be okay but if it's more like let's player playing themselves with exaggerated personality traits and a Minecraft skin then I would say that's veering too close to rpf

In this case they do use the youtubers screen name as the character name, which is one of the reasons I'm very "I shouldn't" about it. They have made it clear that the character opinions and such aren't their own, mostly I think to keep the fans from going "omg why are you so mean" about various character actions. But it being the second thing you bring up seems kinda grey area-y? As the character I'm thinking of the YouTuber is very secretive about their real self, and have stated that even their persona in non-SMP videos is exaggerated.

But yeah I'm erring more towards it being too close to RPF for my comfort.

The thing I have had to internalize is that it's really rare for anyone to actually, directly say they are just not that into you, they're going to do things like give you 1-2 tags in response to starters over the course of a year. Stop trying so hard, be free, find new people! Hopefully lovely new partners are waiting for you in 2024.

how do we really feel about “is this a crau or just an oc”, i’m torn on doing it because rebooting the character didn’t have the same magic and i have some stuff i want to explore with this character’s continued story

Some people hate CRAUs but I have played CRAU a time or two and never had a problem. Ask yourself:

1) Are you apping just to ship with another character?
2) Have you added on weird physical transformations to your character they didn't have in their original canon? 3) Are you going to go up to characters your character has knowledge of from past cr and try and replicate your old cr, or borderline-infomod due to knowledge your character has from past cr with that character?
4) Were you playing them in a sex game previously?
5) Are you going to be bringing them in with a massive amount of trauma and angst they didn't have initially that your castmates and crmates are gonna have to help deal with?

If the answers to all those questions are no that's good. Otherwise, use your best judgement, be respectful and chill of other players, don't press it if someone doesn't want to play your cr au, don't have your character be hyper-jaded about the status quo of a game (predictable event cycle, etc), just be chill, and you will most likely be fine.

Anon above is right. CRAU is fine and in my experience the good ones aren't even noticeable because the character is still recognizable even as a CRAU. If your CRAU character is too far removed from the original for any reason, people would dislike them.

da but maybe you could file the serial numbers off the character and make an oc out of them instead? bigger distance from the potential off-putting name connection + you'd have the freedom to give them additional traits and etc further distancing them from the youtuber's persona too

honestly my big issue is “idk if this is unrecognizable”. best example i can imagine is playing endgame azula as a lcw. no one gives a fuck about the fire nation and people are actively interested in her, so what happens when she’s kept in that setting for a couple years?

Hmm. Obviously idk your particular situation, but maybe you should grid out what traits have changed and what traits they've retained. Is there an obvious progression from point A to point B that you can explain and justify? Also, how many core character traits and motivations have undergone that change? I can't put a hard number on it but if you are seeing that all their core traits are different now, you might want to think twice about bringing them in as CR AU.

Also to be blunt, how popular is the canon? How many people are probably gonna know or give a shit about the character development you've written?

In Azula's case, I think you can show her growth and development without removing her struggles and everything that makes her Azula. So she might not be at rock bottom or in the middle of a breakdown after two years in game, but she isn't a perfectly healed character either. A new game also brings different problems that could lead to old habits resurfacing, especially if she has canonmates in the new one, so considering the new setting as potentially leading to regression would be another way to keep her recognizable
