oh, dreamwidth park is lonely in the dark/all the horny memes have no tag-outs

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

nayrt, but 1) it really depends on how you word it (and based on your replies here you'd be alright imo), and 2) unfortunately if they get insecure over this, no matter how nicely you phrase it, that's not something you can help :c

personally i'd give them a casual poke, just say essentially what you have here (that having this in every single tag throws you out of the scene) & ask if they can tone it down or stop altogether. so, agreeing with ayrt; gentle request, then move on if it turns out your writing styles don't mesh

I remember ages ago there was a Bucky whose username was [personal profile] barnesandnoble which made me laugh

(Anonymous) 2023-12-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Something like that. I liked tagging them enough and the ultimate story we were crafting but also didn't really know them oocly well enough to know how bringing it up would fly. Also I know I have a bad habit of doing a lot of introspection but then ultimately have actually nothing to react to when I'm at my worst (so, lol, yeah some meta commentary is kind of gonna happen when that's the case I'm aware those times were 100% on me and I do enjoy it in smaller amounts!) so it was a nice exercise for me too with trying to put more thought into making sure I had my characters doing things that could be reacted to, pointing out facial expressions, any shift in tone when they talk, what they're looking at, etc. just being more aware of how the scene would be taken in by someone not in my character's head.

you could just answer it how you normally would then go through at the end and reverse the numbers?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
i do this sometimes. not in every tag! for me it's not author's note style (so no lols) but switching out of my character's head and to omniscient perspective to add something that my character wouldn't be thinking about or know but that adds to the scene or provides context.

i'd say if you really hate it and they do it constantly, you're incompatible. if the person has a hmd you can maybe mention it there but if not please don't pm out of the blue to critique writing style. just move on.

i don't think it's a ship most people would go for but yeah, i should probably at least try

How incredibly kind of you (and the person who donated extra points), Anon! Happy holidays to you, too!

ayrt and yeah. I hope my comment didn't come out too harsh because I am sincerely sympathetic and have been in similar positions before, and I really had to learn when I needed to set boundaries with myself. It's tough to do but worthwhile because stopping yourself from chasing after an indifferent person eventually feels good.

i'm trying to find games that don't strip powers and alter my character's appearance and it's frustrating. i'll check out some of the suggestions in this thread, too.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
This is the best advice.

Re: ATP/ENABLE ME

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
same, it's really discouraging when your character isn't the type who would go crazy with their powers to make nerfing necessary but who also just wouldn't be much fun to play without them.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I did. I always check the profile to see if they want a PP stating 'Hey, we're in the same game together!' or only prefer friends in current games or anything like that. We'd already been doing a thread together and I have it right on my Plurk that I was in the game with so-and-so.

But the no response to the friending request + ignoring our thread after a certain point led me to conclude maybe they just don't like threading with me for whatever reason.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
this is great feedback, thank you!

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
i think the lols and very definite non-prose language are part of what's breaking me out of the immersion, but even so, if it's their thing, it's their thing!

i might ask if it's something they think they could dial down purely because of my inability to stay focused, which will hopefully bring home that it's less objective criticism and more of an accommodation. and if that's not something that can work for them, maybe it's best if we find other people to thread with!

i do value their cr, hence why they're one of my regulars, but i'm at a point where it takes me twice as long to pen them a response tag that's half of my usual effort, and i'm steadily putting off their tags for last - which isn't fair to them, either.

You didn’t come across as too harsh and thank you for the advice. It’s something I’m planning to apply in the future. A rule like that helps me feel less guilty about it and will save me and hopefully the indifferent person a lot of avoidable grief.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If it were me, I'd want to know I was doing something offputting instead of suddenly being ghosted by someone I thought was enjoying threading with me?

You don't owe anyone an explanation for not wanting to thread with them, but a sudden stop leaves it up to their imagination.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-22 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't like this and don't do it, but i don't hate it enough to stop threading with someone over it. but ironically some of the people who do it a lot really hate when i don't respond in turn, i've gotten questions from thread partners about why i repeatedly "ignore" half their tags when the only part i don't respond to is this kind of meta narration/introspection.

It's fine to just skim past what you don't understand, anon! You should still be able to get the gist of it. OP is just asking the same question as you with a bunch of graphic design and printing jargon thrown in: "Should I flatten before or after resizing?" Though since you're curious, "Having soft-proofed a duplicate of your master image and added a couple of adjustment layers to correct for the output process" just means, "I already made a duplicate file and added adjustment layers to the duplicate so that the digital version [soft proof] will print correctly [output process]". So it's not even relevant to us since we're not printing our icons!

A lot of the post is just them arguing with each other on whether the OP's question was answered, anyway. One of my favs is "

No one said that alone would cause artifacts. You continue to have difficulty reading and understanding the text already presented

". I love that "did you even read what I wrote?" is a universal complaint across all fields, lol.

The most interesting thing I read imo, other than the image I linked you, was this: "Save your layered master file. Then flatten it and save it with a suffix like "fltn", do your resizing for your desired print, do your output sharpening, convert to sRGB, convert from 16 to 8 bit, save as jpg or tif and upload [to the client for them to print]." I know the conversion to sRGB is so that the colors print correctly on paper as opposed to digital, but I'm not sure what the conversion to 8 bit does or why jpg or tif is preferred (I thought pdf was more standard for sending a file to printers, but I guess if you're printing yourself, you don't need that step). I assume it also doesn't matter much for digital files (usually jpeg or png), but since I do artwork prints on occasion, this caught my interest. More for me to research! But all the other advice they give of their "workflow" (flatten > save as duplicate > resize > sharpen) is the same as what we discussed prior.

for any other hobby artists like me who might be curious: after researching, it's recommended to work in 16 bits because you'll get smoother gradients (and less color banding), but most printers print in 8 bits, hence the need to convert prior to printing.

I don't care whether I win a random draw or not I just want to know if there is somebody out there in this hobby that is thinking about me.
