oh, dreamwidth park is lonely in the dark/all the horny memes have no tag-outs

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

Yes, it is off-putting to me. I wouldn't press your boundaries, you have every right to avoid OOC contact if you want, but I definitely wouldn't keep playing with you.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
nah, im the same way myself. i mostly stick to memes lately, and i don't even rly put any identifying ooc info in my character journals these days

if some people find it off-putting that's understandable, more power to them finding the more social players they can jive with. i just haven't got it in me for plurk maintenance/discord base-touching/daily ooc chatting anymore like i used to

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
absolutely not, but i won't lie, i have more fun tagging thread partners who become friends through ooc chatting and the like, so i naturally end up prioritizing them over my other partners. i take more chances in my writing and plotting with them, too.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
that's totally understandable, and something i've accepted is i definitely miss out on very good writers this way. they will want to get hype with someone, it totally makes sense!

i guess it's something i am willing to accept since i would probably stop having fun altogether if i forced myself to socialize with everyone.

really? to the point of not playing with someone? if you were having fun playing, asked for their plurk and they said they didn't have one you'd ghost them from then on?

pb_updates or other insanejournal icon communities, honestly. they do a bunch of la icons over on that site for random things for ocs.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
no op but in a similar situation.

for me, i'm slow to warm up to people as well as a big introvert with a fairly active rl social life. online chatting drains my social batteries as much as/worse than rl socialization, and i prefer to save that energy for established friends. the only real exception is if i thread with someone for the better part of a year and we seem to click well in our plotting talks, i might gently extend plurk friendship overtures (or accept them) but i'm unlikely to ever become a 'daily chitchat' sort of rp friend.

Lmfao what is this preference shaming you've got going on

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
i think that makes sense. it's a huge need not met and a part of the synergy for some, it's why i accept i will lose partners this way too.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
definitely do what's best for you, op, and don't sweat the people who make you feel bad about your boundaries. but just to be clear, my friendships with my favorite thread partners go well beyond hyping whatever we're writing. i generally become friends with people whose writing i enjoy or really vibe with, and the ensuing personal connection just makes it even easier for me to write with them, if that makes sense.

https://asylums.insanejournal.com/pb_updates/ i realized a link might be useful...there's also the

https://wikicon.insanejournal.com/ where you can find icons for specific actors/actresses once you have chosen a pb. some of the entries are friendslocked at the icon posting journals but the makers will add you relatively quickly if asked. if you need an ij invite in order to do that someone here probably has a few

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah same, nothing wrong with other people being more sociable but it's just not really for me. thankfully i haven't gotten any weird confrontational ones, just the one person who got a little boundary pushy. everyone else has been chill and cool, or (hopefully) have the same preferences where we just occasionally chat plot and write happily away at one another

(Anonymous) 2023-12-19 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
well........

yeah? i don't put ooc info on my journals so if i went out of my way to reach out to you it's because i found you interesting and fun. i probably wouldn't take it personally so much as promptly lose interest tbh and go find other people.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-20 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
same here, honestly. i don't expect us to be chatting every day buddies but i like being able to talk to someone i thread regularly with about our characters and threads.

Tav info

[personal profile] underelf 2023-12-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hello! I am wondering what kind of information is good to have in a journal for a Tav (or Durge) character. I haven't played protags like this outside of friends but have been thinking of trying her (and/or another of my tavs) on a meme or two. Just not really sure what people are looking for in terms of amount of information. Choices? Basic stats? a little background? A lot? When I play NPCs (or Origins) I am super laidback too, just happy to see all the good OCs/Tavs/etc. but I know a lot of people don't like blank journals with OCs in general so I'd like to set up an info page.

Thanks for your help! :}

for malleables like this I find a quick bullet point list the most useful since I can digest it quickly and tag faster. like a one or two sentence background, any big game choices that would alter how companions etc view or react to them, and then the basic details that help the non canon familiar: brief mention of any appearance things or powers you should know, maybe include preferences on ships or gen or whatever, that kind of thing.

- what i see most in icons are an increase in saturation or vibrancy (do this before you resize) and sharpness (do this after you resize). things like brightness/contrast and adjusting tone can be done on a case by case basis (do these before resizing, if you do).

- use the rule of thirds when cropping. this is why you'll see most faces in icons are "off center" instead of dead in the middle of the icon, and with the person's eyes in the top third of the icon most of the time.

https://www.creative-photographer.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/beyond-rule-thirds-2-grid.jpg
- fill the space. you're working at 100x100 so crop as zoomed in as you comfortably can. for instance, i find myself cropping just above the hairline (do you need to see the top of their head?) or their eyebrows (do you need to see their forehead?). but if they're crossing their arms or gesturing, i'll crop them with at least half of their hands in view to get the pose across. variety also feels nice in an icon set, so try alternating between more zoomed in (cropped just below the collar bone) and less zoomed out (cropped just above the armpits or the waist)

- after you've made your icons, look at them in at least one other place, like both a laptop and a desktop or both a desktop and your phone, and adjust if anything looks odd on the second screen to find a happy medium. i like to post a few icons to my journal for this reason, too. sometimes they just look different in dw than in a folder.

hope some of that helps, and good luck!

+1 to all of this. Wonderful advice. An easier way to compare is to look at the icon both in the editing program (I use paint.net) and also in file explorer.

When you're making art from originally uncolored sources like manga, you will appreciate being pixel precise. Erase the odd line out, clean up some weird brushstrokes, change the handful of white spots in the hair to black (or vice versa). While it seems insignificant, too subtle, you will notice a dramatic change when doing the comparison.

I personally have never found PSDs useful. IMO, they honestly make every icon feel 'samey' in a bad way; just because it's consistent doesn't mean it's good. A quick and dirty method that I use, to achieve the same effect, is by copying the source layer and then motion blurring it. Maybe change the hue, do some leveling, and tinker with blend mode. I suggest that you write down what steps you did exactly and in their exact order too, so you can replicate it in future icons, rather than slapping on the same filter every time.

When you're making icons** not art. (I mean, icons are an art form too, if you ask me. Graphic design is my passion.)

Definitely helpful, thank you so much for your insight! I was planning on including general prefs/shipping/backtagging etc. but was at a loss for how much or how little other info was good <:
