i am an absolute sucker for childhood friends to lovers and this has some great potential for that with all the pining she had for him. obviously, there would need to be some work involved if we follow canon, but i am happy to au things or do some canon divergence.

as a fellow ravenloft scholar, i think this is a simple case of "not all games are for every character"

the setting is as OP describes, it both draws in people who are susceptible to corruption and works to corrupt those it draws in. if youre not willing to compromise on or at least toy with that point as a player, the setting is just not for you, simply put

In a month, I'll be leaving to study abroad. I've also been really wanting to get into DWRP after lurking around reading things and figuring out how things work here. Question for those who have more experience both RPing and moving across an ocean than I do: is starting right now a bad idea? Will people be mad if I get things going, then have to hit pause on tags for like a week while I straighten everything out? Would it be better to wait until January to start playing in DWRP?

you dont have to let anyone know if you dont want to, but if you want to give people a heads up as a courtesy you can say youll be busy/slow for a month or so (you can be vague and say rl is busy for you so you might be inconsistent for a bit while you adjust or things settle, or if you want you can say youre moving overseas like you have here) then thats good enough imo

i say month because i feel moving is very draining experience and i can imagine its that 2x if youre moving overseas. a month gives you more of a buffer for personal peace of mind, that way if it ends up being less you can always be like "actually im back early" rather than "actually its gonna be longer, sorry." you can be even vaguer than that and say "for a while" if you want a bigger buffer. or if its a psl ad on emp, rpa, or pslcall then you can say youre a slow tagger and leave it at that

if its threads on bakerstreet i probably wouldnt bother pming anyone unless it seemed like the thread had traction, simply cause of how bakerstreet is (you can put it in your journal if you like though, that way you dont have to pm everyone you try to play with but the info is still out there)

having said that moving can be a very stressful experience and all kinds of complications can arise. i wouldnt start up threads in the same situation myself, but its really depends on what youre comfortable with

And, just speaking from the perspective of someone who's played Ravenloft tabletop campaigns, one of the most fun things about Ravenloft is the fact that even things done with the absolute best intentions can have horrific consequences and send a character careening off on the path of corruption, because the setting is designed to twist things and people.

Character A should never tag Character B, and Player A should never have their other characters mention Character A to Character B - if there's something where Character A would come up, it's up to Player B to signal that it's ok. Player A should also not sign Character A up for player plots that are run by Player B.

If Player B doesn't want other characters in the game to mention Character A to them, it's up to them to communicate that specific wish to other players. If they don't want to be involved in a not-run-by-them player plot that also involves Character A, it's up to them to either not sign up, or talk things out with Player A if it's something they both want to participate in - opting out of playing with a character does not give you automatic veto rights over their CR or participation with other people.

It is absolutely fucking insane to expect A to never tag posts that B has also tagged, or for A to never be mentioned on Plurk or in Discord.

Essentially, opting out allows you to say "do not interact directly with me as this character", and that's it.
