my best advice: write diary entries and talk to people about the character, either your fellow players or a friend who also rps and would be interested. sometimes it helps to just say things aloud/type them, and it can click, or have someone ask questions.

more detailed stuff:
since I've started ttrpgs, I've used the worksheet linked above (and the guide at thecharacterchick on tumblr) for creating characters, and will write them into my game notebook, and after sessions, will add notes about development and maybe any particularly insightful comments the character made, or thoughts I had them about them.

if there's a particular scene that sticks for me where I know I could have said something better, I'll briefly write out the scene and then what the character should have said, just so I can keep it in mind, just in case something similar comes up.

before sessions, I'll review my character concept and notes, and make note of anything that I should be aware of or anything that carried over from the previous session.

one of my groups used the fate system and each character had a high concept and aspects. our GM had us create a phrase that kind of summed up each character and it helped to keep that in mind. i don't use that system anymore but i try to keep a high concept for them in mind - stoic swordswoman trying to find her lost dog, lazy rogue who secretly wants to write plays so he listens to all the gossip and drama - and that helps shape their voice.

cloudofdaggers is such an absolute hoot, and I love seeing their tags around on memes. Ceres is such a chaotic gremlin sometimes, and reading their responses to other companions and Tavs has been a great joy. I haven't threaded much with him myself, but he always makes me laugh when peeking at his threads on Bakerstreet.

divinestrike is one of those Tavs I see tagging just about everyone, and I think it's wonderful to have someone so welcoming in the community! Nepione has such an interesting personality too, and I've loved following her on memes just to see what she's getting up to. Her clashing values as a cleric with some of the companions makes her feel so fleshed out, like she belongs in the game herself.

bardtricks is a Tav with so much thought put into him that I can't help but love him. He's got the right amount of struggles and barbs to make him feel right at home with the characters from the game, and his player has been wonderful to plot with. They were one of the first people I tagged while voicetesting, and they've been so fun to play with ever since.

I want to nominate them all, but I'm leaving it at three because I could gush for days about all the Tavs and companions I've threaded with. Just know that somewhere, there's a companion player who thinks you are the bee's knees! All BG players, assume this is about you, because it probably is. ;)

where's that one joy from a post or two ago that was like "when you see two of your favorite characters shipping with each other"

feeling that rn. watching a thread and going "awww," good for you guys!

I went and looked at an old thread (about two months old) the other day to reread it for fun, saw the post had accumulated hundreds of comments, and thought that with how long the thread I had on there went that I'd be all over the flatview. However, when I checked, there were still lots of people threading on the meme, with several threads still rolling along! I wasn't even on the last couple of pages. I then checked other threads on other meme posts, and it was the same situation.

I will never let folks try to convince me that Bakerstreet and memes are dead. They're most likely just looking at the last week, not realizing lots of people still have threads going weeks later, and are getting lots of use out of the community. It made me smile to realize there's so much activity out there that people just don't see, and that people are having fun in their own time. :>

i am writing a cute texting thread with a new character, who is a fairly rare and underdeveloped lady, and one of their more popular canonmates, and it's been so nice to get her voice. thank you, canonmate, i'm loving their thread!!

This is mine! It's mostly just enrichment toys for my fiery red mare. She's recovering/rehabbing from major spinal surgery so I try to keep her little brain busy so she doesn't get into mischief. If anyone is curious, the ball pit balls are to put in a box for her and have treats at the bottom so she has to dig/snuffle through the balls to get to the food. It simulates how horsies dig through the snow in the wild to get to grass!

Ooh thank you anon! I do talk to other players about my character. We are playing vampire the masquerade and we get a lot of downtime actions. Something me and another player tried doing was having ‘silly’ downtime that’s meant to have our characters get to know each other more in depth.

I like the phrase usage too, and vampire kind of does that but I guess if I contextualize it with a sentence versus words, it might help me stick to my concept better.

I’ll definitely add these to my prep for the week and see how it goes next Saturday.
