oh, dreamwidth park is lonely in the dark/all the horny memes have no tag-outs

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

I play out negative and tense CR fairly frequently, and expect it with my character. he's not a villain, but he is abrasive and blunt, and typically doesn't get along with that many characters in canon. he's not overtly antagonistic, but that doesn't mean that threads with him are always going to be 'easy' conversations, or pleasant. (this is where he tends to have cr that errs towards 'tense' rather than negative, because he's very firm in his opinions and will therefore butt heads with characters who are equally firm.)

I guess in some respects it depends on what you classify as negative cr — a lot of the cr I have with this particular character isn't what I'd term as negative per se, as anything that edges towards that is something that as a character, he's not interested in pursuing and would generally just drop the conversation or what have you, but it's not positive.

and fwiw I would never expect negative cr to just occur with villains, that's ... a slightly bizarre reading to me. people don't get along irl for all sorts of reasons. ofc that doesn't mean you have to be happy or comfortable with negative cr, but that doesn't mean it's something that happens with just villains. different POVs, different experiences etc all lend themselves to different perspectives, and depending on what type of negative cr you're experiencing, the people that are starting off interactions with you in that way might not even view it as negative cr.

not to say that there aren't players out there who go the weirdly antagonistic route off the bat, but IME they're the minority these days.

as for why I enjoy less than nice CR — in general, it gives me more scope to explore characterisation. I get to dig into the nitty gritty of all the facets of [whatever particular character] and IC disagreements or tense discussions can lead to character growth or ideas for plots, new threads, whatever. it's just part and parcel of RP for me and I don't find it uncomfortable as long as there's enough IC reason for the CR to be going in that direction.

A lot of characters are just predisposed to have negative cr? I've played a couple hyperaggressive shitheads over the years and to play them as super polite and nice would just be OOC. I really wouldn't take it personally if I were you, especially if it's IC for the other character.

To me it's fun because usually the anger or aggression is masking some trauma response, and working through that is satisfying. It also lends itself to a lot more varied CR. I've found that when I play generic good guys, all my CR winds up in the same vein of "nice", and when I play idiots with no chill I can usually get a more thread variation because different characters react very differently to being needled.

Conflict is also just like... the crux of storytelling in general. Playing a character who creates problems for themselves is great at giving me short term goals to accomplish and makes them never really feel stale.

+1, tried playing a generic good guy but low-conflict relationships do little for me as a writer sadly. Not to say "nice" dynamics can't have their own dramas, but I like more tension!

they will start off a tag in with an insult, or with outright antagonism that doesn't really fit the scenario. it feels more like inventing reasons to be aggro tbh. and actually, no i don't have no negative cr listed as a preference which is a good idea.

i hadn't thought to do that because typically i get varied cr, some friendly to neutral and some more tense or angsty which i enjoy, whatever makes sense for the setting. but occasionally like i said i do get someone coming in real hot and i'm left scratching my head a bit.

I used to enjoy it a lot more. Playing with someone who had the thing where they got physically distressed by any perceived criticism on an ooc level who could not handle me trying to make sure we communicated about the negative CR left a bad taste in my mouth. I still enjoy it but I'm careful with who I play it out with now and make sure I'm comfortable the other player isn't going to go nuclear about it first.

i mean, maybe their character is an asshole and it makes sense for them to kick things off with an insult? if you don't want to interact with any mean characters then that might also be something to put into your prefs.

that said i both kind of get where you're coming from but also love to play with negative cr. the key is making sure that there's still a thread of improv to play with for everyone involved in a scene - making sure there's a 'no AND' to respond to - and i feel like often people don't have a good grasp on that. i play a stoic asshole so he's got the wombo combo of 'says jerk things' and 'barely emotes' so i put a lot of effort into describing the physicality of his movements and actions as well as setting up his jerk responses in a way that allows other characters to riff off of them. having a jerk character approach with an insult that would usually just prompt the other character to say 'fuck off' and walk away just sounds like a boring thread with some boring ass negative cr.

I used to do it more, because I play a character who can be gruff and very opinionated, and the dynamic was interesting if it furthered cr

but then I got inundated with low effort antagonistic tags that had no payoff or goal, so i'm picky now

i play a lot of asshole characters so i usually end up with some negative cr which is fine and i enjoy it, but these days i make sure to specifically ask that we try to make it a relationship which will develop or change so it's not just negativity for negativity's sake. if someone just wants to use my character as a moral punching bag or insult them behind their back then they can do that on their own and i don't want to waste my energy getting involved.

Some of my favorite CR I've ever played has been long-term, complex, negative CR. I think the key to this working out for me is that the characters got something from each other even when they were at loggerheads; for instance, Char1 could be manipulated into helping Char2 when Char2 was physically hurt so Char2 had a reason to keep the relationship going, and on the more nebulous side of things Char1 was also stimulated and engaged by the chewy, difficult discussions they had with Char2 even when they were on opposite sides of things.

Negative CR where the characters want nothing but to escape from each other doesn't hold much interest for me. What keeps them coming back to each other? If the answer to this question is compelling, I will probably love the negative CR.

I got a tag back after 75 weeks recently. It's a slow pace because I have so much to reread to get the vibe back, but it can happen!

dreamwidth newbie question, sorry it's a dumb one: how do you make it so that the main page of your journal shows not the recent entries, but instead just a navigation page with links to specific entries?

thank you so much! hope you and yours have a wonderful december!

you can tweak the css to adjust things like the text colors so that it doesn't mess with those used for your nav post, for example.

i generally enjoy negative cr but i don't like it when it doesn't fit the scenario either. like, if my rudely opinionated character posts their controversial hot takes to the network, bring me all your antagonism! if my nice peaceful character posts about opening a childcare center for npcs, i don't expect death threats within three tags (true story) so it's more offputting

i also find some characters are easier to build interesting negative cr with than others. i have some that would jump right in to an intense rivalry, and others who would see no reason to interact with the rude/violent person again if they could help it. there are ways around that, but it has to be worth the effort and ooc planning so i don't generally do it with "aggressive for no good reason" characters

the negative cr i enjoy most is when characters dislike each other because of genuine differences or conflicts of interest, or when there are misunderstandings or wrong assumptions made. random aggro reactions, not so much

don’t feel bad, nonnie! it doesn’t necessarily mean nobody wants to play with you, just that maybe they can’t find a way to get their character to mesh with yours. there’s a handful of people on the tdm i’m on who i really wanted to tag, but couldn’t think of ways to make our characters interact in an interesting way. if you’re really looking for those threads, try tagging out!

Re: Headcanon: where do you draw the line?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-04 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This was my thought too. Something like, if a character isn't stated to have food preferences, having them enjoy strawberry ice cream would be a headcanon. Or "they keep their hair short because they like how light it feels" would be a headcanon. Or "They don't like horror movies because they're kind of jumpy already in canon" would be a headcanon.
