a quick little story about her: when i adopted her, her name was dr. meredith peggy knox after two characters in grey's anatomy! they called her both meredith and peggy interchangeably so she didn't really know her name, and cause i know a peggy i renamed her melody

Heya nonnies, I'm working on a game premise, and can’t figure out whether it counts as a horror game or not. I keep worrying at this because I think horror is super subjective, and I can’t figure out where to draw that line.

Thing is, I’m a horror lightweight. I scare easy: I can’t look at Silent Hill, Amnesia, or Resident Evil stuff without getting a case of the NOPES. But there’s horror-ish stuff that I do like: monster transformations, surreal and unsettling scenery, etc. Want those in the premise for sure.

And I’m sure there’s plenty of players out there who are either 1. More squeamish about this stuff than me, or 2. Horror buffs who don’t think this is very scary at all. So… What exactly is the secret ingredient that counts as horror? Is it a whole bunch of scary elements like dead bodies, gore, and scary dudes? Or is it vibes like a sense of helplessness?

Skittish but inquiring minds wish to know!

horror's intent is to scare. it wants to elicit that "NOPE" feeling, so that you can be held hostage by it and get a thrill from surviving it without actually experiencing it first hand. there is no single secret ingredient. it just has to want to scare you.

your listed examples of things you can't handle are pretty mild as far as horror goes, so i don't recommend trying anything labeled "horror game" or else you're going to get dragged for it. there's already a history of players being exasperated with not being able to do anything legitimately "horror" in games labeled for it.

occasionally spooky or surreal themes and settings aren't necessarily horror and don't need to be labeled as such. it's ok to not like horror! do what makes you happy.

I think horror should be... well, horrifying. The things you listed that you like are more unsettling and scary than horror.

Silent Hill, Amnesia, and Resident Evil are classics of the horror video game genre because they unnerve, horrify, and scare. They are meant to be dark in the gristly way. Which is not to say you can't have horror without these gristly elements, but you have to think about the broader market you are appealing to. If I was in the market for a horror game, these are the things I'm thinking about, not something like, say, Undertale, which has monster transformations, surreal and unsettling scenery, etc. I love Undertale, but horror it is not, and labeling it as such would be a misnomer.

Not to say there isn't a market for unsettling or scary games. Snowblind wasn't a true "horror" game and it did very well while still letting its players do a lot with its setting. The limit is going to be what you as a mod are comfortable allowing in your game as that will become the limit for what players can expect to be able to play.

Anonies, where do you go to do character exercises for tabletop games?

I know it's not too different from writing rp but I think I just have a bit of social anxiety about voice acting in front of people. (Even if they are friends...) I also have trouble thinking on my feet. I try not to hem and haw at my decisions because I don't want to keep people waiting but sometimes I'm always thinking "oh this would have fit my character better..." after the fact.

What tips and tricks do you use? I keep a notebook of everything and star anything that my character would icly make note of. But I'm ready to go beyond that.

Write a few diary entries in their voice (using online prompts or just making stuff up), then work your way up to improvising little monologues to yourself instead.

Again, I want to thank you all for your generosity. Every once in a while I receive a book or two from this list throughout the year, and it's always an unexpected surprise. It truly does mean more than I can say.

I'm still without budget, so the books that you folks have been sending are really powering our school's library. My kids are so, so excited every time they get a chance to check out books from the library. They are constantly asking for new content, books about history and graphic novels and sports figures. Over three years they've developed into such passionate little readers. They've figuring out what they like to read, and I'm always scrambling to try and keep up with them.

As always, anything sent is beyond appreciated by my students.

If I can hop on my soapbox, please take the time to support your local libraries and track what your school boards are doing to support schools and school libraries. You've been so amazing in your support of me and my students, and lending that care to your communities will go a long way too.

I've had a trash year, my dog and my soul cat passed away within weeks of each other and a lot of other crap has happened, but I have a job, a roof over my head, and a person I share it with so overall I'm coming out ahead, and I'll give back where I can.
