This first one is for a family my department at work in the library has adopted for the holidays. It's a sad story. The father, who has always helped us save a spot to park our bookmobile in their neighborhood, was shot in a drive-by shooting just eating lunch outside in October. After a lot of touch and go in the hospital, he was able to come home. He will not be able to walk again and he was the sole breadwinner for his family. We're trying to just give them a nice Christmas despite all the tragedy they've been through. All the items on this list are for the mom, dad, and their two kids. Please keep in mind if you're buying something, it MUST arrive before December 8th, as that's the cut-off date I have to turn anything in at work. It would mean the world to me to be able to make their Christmas bright.

The fundraiser is a non-profit animal rescue group so it'll be going to a good cause.

this time of year is notorious for things slowing down. between a lot of jobs getting super busy during/around the holidays/end of the year, seasonal depression/winter blues, cold/flu season, etc. there are a lot of different things at play here. i'm not saying that it isn't a bummer, because it is. however, slowness is more common than not this time of year, and i think a majority of people don't make plans with the intention of being slow or fading out. things will get better.

not disagreeing with you but things will slow down every time of the year. there is always an occasion on hand that a flake can point to, in addition to the usual "oh no rl" stuff that could be related to any type of job/lodging/internet/family/partner issues affecting availability for rp.

it's like stores pointing to whatever convenient holiday is near to do some sort of sales promotion. thanksgiving > christmas > new year > chinese new year > valentine's > fasting month > blahblah... "it's christmas, busy with retail job," "it's chinese new year, ahma is visiting from hongkong," "valentine's day is here, seeing my gf again for the first time in a year," "i'm fasting, no energy to do tags in the day" oh my goodness this person has so much more of a social life and accessibility to grass than me.

tl;dr time management is important

so i'm totally new to dwrp/journal rp, though not to rp in general (cut my teeth in chatrooms and forums years ago, then mostly did 1-on-1 rp with friends i met through other fandom activities who also happened to be roleplayers). right now i'm lurking a lot, trying to get a feel for the general vibe of this community, but i've got a couple questions. sorry if they're dumb or things that have been discussed a bunch before.

1. my current understanding is that people mostly play in games, on memes, or in 1-on-1 threads on their own journals. is that about right? how do people go about finding people to rp with 1-on-1? i know there's enablemeplz, and i assume if you tag someone on a meme and you like each other's vibe there's the option of taking it to your journals, does that sound right?

2. i've figured out some of the terms/abbreviations people use from context, but i would love for someone to explain these to me: PSL, CR, tag in/tag out, musebox, open post (i know it's a post on your journal that's open for comments, but what exactly is it for?)

3. i know this is more of a nebulous thing, and the answers will probably depend on a lot of different factors, but nonetheless i'm curious as to people's impressions: how open is the dwrp community to people who have never dabbled in journal rp before? is the expectation that everyone will blend, or is there some room for different habits and ways of doing things (assuming everyone is acting within the rules of whatever space they're in)? i'll admit that i'm asking at least partially because i'm nervous people will think i'm weird if i'm too obvious about being new to the scene, LMAO

1. ime I get most of my one-on-one play from ambushing people on memes and seeing if we click, passive plotting doesn't work as well as a strong starter and a good idea

you can basically assume that half the people on memes are dying for a tag and will be very happy if you hit them up

2. psl = private storyline, different from a regular thread because this can span across lots of threads and a shit ton of comments, maybe w/ an elaborate au

cr = character relationships, basically how our characters mesh

tag = comment

tag in = someone coming to you w/ a comment aka a tag

tag out = you hitting people up w/ a comment

musebox = basically a community w/ your rp journals, think of it as a private sandbox

open post = thing people can tag

if i say i have an open post on my musebox you can tag into, that translates to 'here is a post on a community you can leave a comment to rp with me on'

3. mixed, mostly it comes down to how quickly you can pick up what people are putting down when it comes to rp norms, but it's the same pretty much everywhere

also same anon but if you want someone to tag i can grab a sock you can pm later? fair warning im busy as all hell rn so im not sure how consistent i can be but i can try

welcome to dwrp nonny! just mention you're new if you're nervous and i think you'll find that most people are happy to be patient and helpful, as long as you're making an effort (which you already are)

both abandoned starters i wrote recently were "i don't care what the thread's about, i'll tag anything" cases, though, so i broke my own personal rule of not writing starters for people who have no ideas or preferences. i was a thirsty, thirsty fool

yeah, even my reliable tag partners tend to be much slower this time of year between holidays (which usually come with family visits), work, etc.
