dine on a balanced breakfast of playing tops and bottoms

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

bouncing off a comment in rp joys, is there any etiquette for scene-setting, like when it should happen & how much (if at all)? i worry about overwhelming people since, when i try suggesting scenery, it can be hit or miss whether tags continue. maybe i just keep tagging people who don’t feel like getting that involved idk

imo there's no reason to spend much time setting the scene unless it's a psl and you're both invested. in memes and game events, the scene/prompt is already there. just get to it, and add any flowery notes later after the ball is rolling.

It really depends. I would add exposition if I come up with a new detail that I feel could affect the thread (eg. on a party prompt, maybe I imagine the thread being set on a balcony outside the party and so I might feel inspired to describe the balcony and the view. But if I'm imagining the thread being set within the party as expected, I don't bother describing the party).

If your priority is to get threads going, consider keeping exposition short and sweet, as there's no telling whether your exposition will click with the stranger you're tagging or whether they'll be turned off. But if scene-setting is something you enjoy, I hope you're able to find RP partners that enjoy that sort of thing too. That's probably your best bet in being able to set scenes up and then have them actually play out.

definitely a 'different strokes' situation! i personally love scene-setting detail and hate working in a vacuum, so i'd be thrilled with your scenery bits. i'd say maybe pepper them in between action and dialogue, to help with flow, but i admittedly wouldn't feel overwhelmed if you went front-heavy with it, either.

scene-setting joy!anon here haha and while i'm sure it's a matter of personal taste and what kind of thread you're playing (i play exclusively fairly involved psls, for example, no texting or short back n forth threads) mostly for me it's a matter of throwing down a lil backdrop to add to the mood, add to character description, ground the location, or give characters something physical to interact with.

for example: if they're in a castle, is it an opulent and fancy palace with crystal chandeliers throwing rainbows everywhere, or a dour cold stone building a bare step up from a fortress? is my character intimidated by the sheer fanciness of everything (or the dirty stark utilitarian fortress) or do they feel right at home there? does the chill light of the full moon cast my character's face into a deep ominous shadow, or is it a soft and bright and silvery night and my character can see the smile upon yours clear as day? my character is shouting and waving her arms - whoops, knocked over a candle and almost catches the bed on fire. your character grabs for a pitcher of - oh wait, nope that's brandy, and yells at my character for being a lush.

scenery doesn't have to be super involved, it can be as simple as whatever furniture/items your character glances at or interacts with, or a warm/cold feeling in the air, however the weather relates to their current mood (it's sunny but i'm SO SAD, it's raining JUST LIKE MY HEART) i just hate rping in an empty white void.

op-- thanks for the answers, everyone, much appreciated! keeping the detail relevant to the action is really solid advice, especially having it add to the mood and flow of the scene. i only play in memes rn but have been considering branching out, since it's tricky for me to stay immersed if a scene is just talking in a void for several tags.

may us scene-setting anons find each other, and thanks again for the thorough responses!
