something you said in another comment made me curious: other than public play, are there any kinks that are WAY more common or trendy in DWRP than they are in real life? do you find that RL kink spaces kind of go through "trends" the way fandom or DWRP sometimes do? (i feel like fandom and DW by extension are super into brats and brat taming at the moment, a few years ago lots of people were writing about daddy kink, etc)

the interesting thing about dwrp's attitude to kink vs irl (or at least my experiences) is that dwrp is actually pretty tame compared to real life kink scenes. unless you're in a kink game then most of the kink that happens in dwrp tends to be scenes in bedrooms where someone is a little rough or occasionally playing out spanking or risky sex. i don't think i've ever seen a full bondage/dungeon scene or things like vac beds or even cages and stocks (though maybe people are doing that in psls?). it's obvious why - because in real life you can spend hours being locked up or in subspace, but it's not necessarily fun or easy to write from that pov.

dwrp's idea of kink is more psychological and about social taboos like incest or rape kinks, less about lifestyle bdsm. but it's less about the actual kink of those things - i rarely see actual ageplay or things like dd/lg or md/lb play. the sex seems to be usually fairly vanilla. if you went to a munch and said you were into breeding and brat play, you'd be welcome but you wouldn't exactly be the kinkiest person there.

in terms of rl kink trends, it's hard to say because there's no single kink community like there is a dwrp community. every kink scene is different. that said there was definitely a surge of interest when 50 shades came out and every cis man with a belt spanking kink decided he could be a daddy dom.

there's definitely a social hierarchy within kink though just like in dwrp. everyone wants to think they're the cool kids. there are scenes of (mostly heterosexual) swinger couples who take lots of coke/mdma and do spanking and pegging and think they're hardcore. then there's the intense pain play bdsm folks who definitely are hardcore. abdl and furries tend to be the ones that other kinksters make fun of. there are people on the scene who practice the "one true kink" philosophy and think they're the arbiters of what's really kinky - usually dommes or daddy doms who don't like kink to be fun or silly.
