fwiw anon, Arknights was my first ever foray into tower defense as a genre (I couldn't even wrap my head around WoW's plants vs. zombies minigame), and I still got really into it. ime, it is a game that can be super rewarding to get super into the strategy element if and when you want to, while keeping all the actually required gameplay accessible to casual and f2p players.

the first three chapters (0 through 2) are extremely forgiving, and also I've saved myself a lot of headaches by just typing "Arknights [stage name]" into youtube's search bar; several prominent youtubers in the community focus on making guides for players who are new to the game and/or operating off a budget.

tl;dr if you are already considering AK but just worried about the tower defense aspect, I would 100% give it a go, because it sounds a lot like what you're looking for. the women are really well-developed (source: I am a huge lesbian) and the story is a top-notch exploration of systematic oppression, chronic illness, generational trauma, and identity. (around the end up chapter 3 it gets good; by the time you hit the end of chapter 6 it is at "holy shit I am so invested and here is my red string board" levels.)

there's a limited banner starting tomorrow, and while no character on the banner is a must-have for a newbie, the game is doing its customary celebration of giving out goodies like mardi gras beads.
