oh to be a beautiful widow taking a rest against my fainting couch

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

if your RP style had a genre, what would it be? by this I mean the kinds of stories you most frequently like to tell in RP, and how they might be categorized if they were media made for public consumption.

I was just thinking about it and wondering how many different ways people might see the same game/CR interactions, etc, please don't take this too seriously

I love crunchy feelings stuff and hard situations but with a sense of humor. dark comedy? dramedy?? a nice balance of pathos and silliness

+1

same, anon. i also dearly love getting to lovingly build up my character with a development arc alongside the occasional silliness

found families, especially when it doesn't take a shipping bend. i play a lot of characters who fall into the dad or dad-adjacent personality type, and also a couple orphans.

if i am feeling shippy, doomed-to-fail romances are my favorite. i am an unrepentant villain fucker... but with me playing the villain.

dramatic harlequin romance with no baring on reality because wild smut is more fun

lgbt+ romance or historical drama/romance.

i like history and i like gay.

historical lesbians that aren't tragedies are my jam. i like writing them because they're so so so rare in literally everything else.

Grimdark with a party hat. I like horror-comedy. I'll summon up Lovecraftian terrors and things that make your skin crawl, but I'll give you a laugh about it. I'll hand you something that is deeply unsettling or sad, but then I'll be dry and make a pun about it.

I can write novels of introspection and description, I can throw together a setting that evokes a feeling of uneasiness or one that is a discordant placidity to what should be felt in the moment, but then my clown of a character goes HONK HONK like Skeeter from Doug, and you'll wonder why you tagged in.

Basically, if you gave a brain-damaged Neil Gaiman the Douglas Adams playbook for action scenarios, and he then dipped it in ungodly ichor and blech from the eighth circle of Hell, then threw some confetti and glitter onto it, that's what I try to write.

honestly if the stuff you write reads even a tiny bit like the stuff you dumped here im pretty sure your writing genre is just you jerking off abt how Teh Epicz Lolzorz you think you are

I hope your bitter attitude to other players in this hobby doesn't extend into your writing with them, judgmental anon. I also hope that you have a lovely day, regardless of your scathing review of my caffeinated enjoyment of writing silly shit.

why do you talk like this

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
anon, they're a nerd. don't act like you're too cool.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
nothing cool about me but at least i'm not that degree of embarrassing, usually

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
hard disagree, anon. you're embarrassing yourself right now

what a brainless comment

(Anonymous) 2022-04-13 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This comment is unnecessarily shady but I agree. I've played with people exactly like ayrt and they're insufferable and godmoddy if you don't do exactly what they want in every scene. I think some people should stick to writing fanfiction.

op of the style

I feel for you, oh my god. I have the inverse problem a lot of the time. I hate it when people only go along with things and just let themselves watch the scene happen, it's like. Look. I'm not making things up just to have your character act as the action/adventure version of a pillowqueen. Please be active in participation. Please fuck around. Please find out. I'm writing this for their entertainment as much as I am my own, and if the RP partner goes the extra mile and thinks of a wild way to react to it, I'm ALWAYS excited to see where it goes.

I think it's weird how people in a collaborative writing hobby don't like to collaborate, though. I can't imagine why anyone would get pissy if their little scene was interacted with in any way. My little scenes are less art and more McDonald's Playland.

I'm writing this for their entertainment

No offense, but this is the attitude that puts me off. You're not writing *for* anyone, you're writing *with* people. Your goals sound laudable and I'm sure you're capable of writing well and in an entertaining way, but maybe you should consider whether you're acting like you're putting on a play and allowing other people to act in it, or approaching it in a truly collaborative way.

Not to be defensive, but to clarify: When they say, 'Hey, could you set this up', and I do? I'm writing for them. I see where you're coming from though! Thanks for pointing that mentality out, I'll be more aware of it moving forward, and I'll commit to working on it. I appreciate you, anon!
