Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

please please please if i break up my character's dialogue up to give bracket exposition in between, that is not an invitation for your character to insert a monologue between my two lines of dialogue.

having some time overlap from tag to tag is expected so you can properly react to things, but it really throws off the flow of the conversation.

this isn't really directed at any specific person but a common habit i've encountered over the years. i've seen it get so bad where people are having layered conversations within one tag.

why do people do this?

and if you're going to comment in here like 'have you communicated with your rp partner about this????' save yourself the time and the effort, i am just here to vent

The layered convo thing for action threads can be jarring. I usually do my best to convey only one running thought in my tags, and when responding to others I just focus on the last thing they said like you would in a typical conversation.

That said if it gets to a point of being too excessive you may be better off communicating that or not tagging them if you don't care enough

It's common because the nature of DWRP encourages that style of roleplaying. Outside of texting memes and murdergames/ECATS you're lucky if a thread gets 1-2 tags a day, and the longer a thread goes on the more likely it is to be dropped... so a lot of players try to cram as much content into each tag as possible. Often this results in monologuing or layered conversations. It can get clunky when a conversation starts branching off into multiple threads, but as long as the players work together and keep it under control there are some significant advantages. IDK, I guess I'm used to it since I used to live in an opposite time zone from most of the people I rped with so it took forever to make progress with shorter, more natural-sounding tags. RP is its own weird little form of writing with some unique limitations, so the rules of novel or script writing don't necessarily apply.

sometimes there's no point to it, but other times the other player has had their character mention a topic and move off of it later in the tag without giving the second player a chance to actually respond to the first idea when they really want to.

then the layering thing starts happening because the characters end up technically having two conversations.

it's weird and annoying but to be entirely honest, i end up rolling with it a lot because it means i'm going to get more done before the other player flakes.

this happens in real conversations all the time though?

just have your character say "hey about that thing you mentioned earlier, what's up with that?"

it's easy to stop layering, though. just have your character respond to just one thing at a time.
