the genres have a lot of potential, but end up being Star Trek minus the worldbuilding/history and DnD minus the kingdoms, unique locales and plot. I love sci-fi and fantasy off of DWRP. In DWRP, it's a red flag that things about to get very generic and very dull very quickly.

but also i have a vague memory of someone trying that and it ending in a wanksplosion so idk if i want to touch that

Yeah, even when games do go heavy on worldbuilding and NPCs, it's a ton of modwork for what usually amounts to set dressing and plot dumps that half the players will ignore anyway. If you strip all the history and cultural conflict out of something like Star Trek, you just have space people wearing spandex and exploring the planet of the week.

I feel like OC and AU games allow for better use of a complicated setting with a lot of background history, but they're unpopular and hard to get off the ground.

yeah i'm already pretty sick of the renewed missiony sci-fi trend. i don't begrudge people for enjoying those games, it really does boil down to personal taste, but they're just not for me and they always seem to attract wank so that's even more reason i give them a wide berth.
