Catboy Boyfriends 'R Us

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

How does one get into comics? Specifically I'm talking about DC comics, I've always liked the animated shows, so I'd like to maybe read some of the comics, but it seems like an absolutely unnavigable archive for a complete newbie. Where do I start? What are all the timelines and reboots supposed to be about? I generally like the Bat-family stuff the most, but I'm open to reading general DC stuff.

Don't worry about reboots that much honestly. Nightwing's pretty good so far and just dumped a ton of baggage from years of bad so the fresh start there might be a good place to look into batfamily stuff. Robin has a relatively new ongoing too but I don't know a lot about it.

comic book timelines are like a long running dwrp game. if you're joining ryslig you could start reading from july 2014 to figure out how to ease yourself into the game, but the game changed mod hands since then, the mods changed the metaplot more once, and you're better off using an easier entry point like the monthly log for the month that you apped into.

with comic books, they've lasted so long that the plot's changed more than once, and characterization changed as time marched on. plus, various writers wrote various interpretations of the exact same character. so, again, going back to dwrp, you probably have rp partners you prefer over others, right? not everyone is the exact same level of ic and engaging, some are better than others.

yeah.

so what i'd rec is:

1. find a character you're interested in
2. find the most recent issue 1/thing heavily advertised as a good entry point
3. start reading from there
4. if you hate the portrayal/interpretation/writing/art, drop it, find a new character you're interested in, repeat steps 2-3

my preference is for batfam & catwoman, so here are my recs:

• the long halloween (followed by dark victory and catwoman: when in rome)
• batman: hush
• batwoman: eulogy
• batman: court of owls ("new 52" issues 1–11)
• catwoman: her sister's keeper
• batman: year one
• ed brubaker's run on 2002 catwoman

i didn't like the killing joke or a death in the family, but those are always on top 10 lists so i'll mention them too

Adding on for catwoman, I really liked valentine's crime boss run. It's a short read too, only two volumes, forget the issue numbers but it was part of DC You if that helps!

seconding the crime boss arc, it also gives selena a romantic storyline with a woman.

I personally find that the best way to enjoy comics is to not especially concern yourself with the big picture. Just find the start of a storyline, enjoy it as its own thing and if anything referenced outside of its context sounds interesting, maybe look that up and read it next.
