Hi I was casually looking at this game but I haven't seen really anything about it/don't know people in it. Can someone give me an idea of what the game is like?

It's been a while since I played there, but at the time it felt like most of the players that I tagged with only cared about smut, or at least prioritized it over our non-smut threads. The player base itself always seemed pretty chill to me. I don't remember any wank from while I was there but I remember there being an issue with a roy mustang player that sexually harassed people, but the mod wouldn't ban them for some reason. no idea if they're still there.

I don't think it was in this game, at least they're not on the taken list now. First time I hear of this.

The smut thing is not untrue in my experience, although as always it varies player to player, it's possible to play no smut at all but you might need to be a little more proactive garnering CR.

Generally I also agree that it seems very chill and drama-free.

I didn't realize smut was such a major part of it. I know it said sex-friendly but that was one sentence at the end of the otherwise detailed premise. I'm not against smut but my character isn't someone who will be very quick to it, I might need time to build up to that with him, is it okay if it's a slower burn for it or do people want it right away?

there is usually at least one smut-oriented prompt per event. it's not a sex game but there's a reasonable amount of kink going on. there's also a lot of dubconny stuff (though not required by any means) so if that bothers you penance this might not be the best fit.

to answer your question: slowburn or opting out entirely is absolutely okay. nobody's pushy about it from what i've seen.

How smut-oriented the experience is depends entirely on who you're trying to tag. There's plenty of gen CR to be made, but there are usually options for people to choose from and they'll gravitate toward their faves. There are a handful of players who treat the game like a smut game. A few others are only interested in hardcore torture and violence in their threads. It really varies, and sometimes it feels like there are three or four mini-games orbiting one another under the same general premise.

to be fair, the mods do encourage the smutty aspects of the game and there's plenty of polyamory going on. i wouldn't say it's the central focus by any means, but i also wouldn't recommend the game to anyone bothered by those themes since they are fairly prevalent.

I suppose, but I'm not sure someone bothered by those themes would be interested in a game set in hell anyway. The premise has a thematic focus on sins and smut is one of the big seven. The mods also encourage stuff like rage, sloth, and gluttony in equal amounts. It's not like smut is focused over those other things. It's just the thing that catches people's attention more easily.

this. it's also a lot easier to thread out without some sort of larger setup for it, so it's not a surprise that people tend to gravitate towards it.

Without rehashing that particular drama, I don't think anyone in that cast is still in the game. I suspect there might have been a case of people being loud on wankgate and not following it up by submitting an actionable mod report. It came and went pretty quietly outside of that blip of activity.

Echoing the above that I've found the game to be very chill. The majority of activity is in the events, which start off slow but gain steam pretty fast. The mods do tend to be on the slower side when it comes to processing requests, NPC threads, etc. and the game is tilted pretty heavily towards LA characters, I play from anime and getting CR across the aisle is definitely harder here, but those are my only real issues.

I wish I could read the network or the logs so I could see what the writing is like there. I assume since it's a mature game they locked it on purpose. What would you say about the overall quality of writing there? Also is it constantly dark or are there some recovery times?

I'd say the writing is of middling quality. This isn't really a plot heavy game so the laidback tone kind of reflects that. It's definitely a mature game with a lot of darker themes with some breathers in between, you can get a good taste of what to expect from the latest TDM.

There's a new Test Drive Meme (https://penancememes.dreamwidth.org/) every month and most of the TLs are written by people already in the game. The latest TDM is a little slow/lackluster, though. I guess most folks are still focusing on the last event.

There are lighter moments in the game so it's not all horror. There's some fluff and fun stuff. Overall the writing isn't bad or anything, but there are a few players I avoid. The players who can tag fast seem to get the most attention regardless of writing ability, but I guess maybe that's true in every game.

Regarding your question about constantly dark, that's more of a player choice than a gamewide decision. There are always dark options, but there are almost always IC opt-outs. For example, a torture prompt might be on the event, but your character isn't obligated to walk into the area it's affecting. Some players feel obligated to go hard on every event every month, and they do tend to complain about burnout. But I'd say that players are the best judges of their characters' limits. If you feel like your dude needs a month off, there's plenty of room to give it to them.

medium divide is a real thing here, unfortunately. i've been threaddropped quite a few times by some players but i don't find it to be a big deal since there's plenty of other characters to bounce off of. i would say the mod speed picked up a little, since they brought a few more on.

Late to this thread but it's pretty chill imo, you can play anything from slice of life to smut and hardcore torture, and anywhere in between in any combination. Plenty of people play smut but plenty don't. If you want to engage with the overall plot there are probably going to be some, well, hellish elements going on, but it doesn't feel like hardcore horror unless you specifically try to steer it that way.

another prospective apper! while plot's not a make or break for me in any games, is there at least enough to do that'll prevent a character from "floating" so to speak? this can be entirely player plot made or not, i'm just not interested in a full sandbox style.

there's one major event each month along with tdms that follow the same pattern. some events have plotty heft, some do not. the mods do switch it up so characters don't get clobbered with trauma after trauma. i'd say they strike a pretty good balance in this regard.

that said, if you're looking for a fast-paced game with nonstop plot, i don't think penance is going to be the best fit. but people do tag and backtag events throughout the month and there's plenty of setting stuff to explore. can't speak for everyone, but i have yet to be bored here.
