flaking for me but not for thee

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I think what ayrt is talking about is the phenomenon on here and elsewhere of anons and players on plurk/interest checks being vocal about their interest ("I love this and would app!" etc) and then never actually turning up to app

if everyone who said so actually apped to these things then maybe more of them would survive. but it seems like a decent amount of people are happy to straight up lie or mislead mods instead of being honest and saying that they don't plan on apping.

this point isn't about random people, it's about already interested players not stepping up when they're needed

I'm the anon a little farther up thread and that's exactly it. You nailed it. I'm talking about players already interested.

There's a common cycle of players register interest, mod makes game, everyone hangs back from apping, game dies. Sometimes they hang back for legit reasons! Game mechanic they don't like got added, confusing layout, their free time changed, whatever. But there's also a lot of people who go "Aw I was going to app there eventually but it looked like people weren't apping right away" and it's like dude.

"Eventually" wasn't going to make the game a decent size like you (royal you) wanted and you were supposed to be one of the people apping. People hanging back because they want the game to be bigger/clearly taking off before they app are going to ensure it doesn't take off. People on my plurk list do it all the time and then whine about liking the premise and the game failing.

I understand people having legit reasons to change their mind or RL issues changing their free time, but for lots of people the reason is they either registered interest already knowing they don't have time, or they hang back from apping, waiting to see that the game is successful, thus dooming it.

imo people should only register interest in interest checks if they think they'll have time and if they're willing to take a chance and be in the starting round.

this quote right here: "you were supposed to be one of the people apping"

this is why you're coming off like a twat. responding yes to an interest check does not suddenly create an obligation to app. ever. in fact, nothing does.

Oh my fucking god, if someone whines about a game not succeeding bc they wanted to app later after it got traction, they're at fault for it not getting traction. I'm not talking about "general people are indebted in joining the game" or even "everyone that interest checks is indebted to joining the game."

This is specifically people who had the time, sat back, refused to app unless it got traction, and then whined about it not getting traction. It's self-fulfilling prophecy and they're the ones that shot themselves in the foot on the premise they liked failing.

The argument so far in this portion of the thread is if you want a game premise to succeed, you have to take the risk and app. If it fails because you hung back, suck it up and don't be a whiner because it's your own fault.

i promise you so few people meet this description they may as well be a non-factor. you're inventing people in your head to be mad about.

you have to take the risk and app

nah, they don't actually, and that's the point you're missing. no one has to app to any game they don't want to, for any reason.

People whine about it all the time and I see "Oh no I was going to app later" on my plurk all the time.

You can nah all you want but it's just fact that by not giving it a shot in a game they're interested in, some people tank game ideas they're interested all by themselves, without the mod doing a thing.

And that to prevent it from happening player attitudes and behavior would have to change. If they don't want to change, they can be that way but they'll tank a lot of stuff they were interested in and just have to live with never getting what they want.

Just to clarify, because my thoughts got clearer after I posted: making slightly nichier games work out and build up a decent sized playerbase sometimes takes work and investment on both sides: mod and player.

I'm just pointing out what would have to change to make some of these games, specifically the ones that have lots of people hanging back only over game size alone when they like other things about the game, to stop failing. Players don't want to invest? They don't want to take a risk? They get no nichey game that had a premise they liked. That's just the simple cause and effect of it.

well somebody looks like twat here but it's not ayrt. (hint: it's you. learn to read.)

okay but there could be dozens upon dozens of reasons why they couldn't ultimately app and the most basic one (was interested and then cooled on the idea) is still valid and shouldn't have people fucking wagging their finger at them trying to lay blame in a situation where blaming people solves none of your problems.

did this strike a nerve with some anons or what? it's okay, we're not talking about YOU PERSONALLY. you can respond without being offended.

maybe if you stop implying insulting things about the people who don't ultimately app to games, despite being on the interest check, maybe people won't feel so insulted.

Maybe you're all projecting and butting in on a conversation about people that aren't you.

Like I said up thread, I see people complaining about this on my flist. Even if it's not everyone, there are people with the time and interest hanging back on a "wait and see" all the time. We're talking specifically about those people, if you're upset because you turned out not to have the time or disliked the addition of a mechanic or had some solid reason, butt out. This isn't about you.
