I am new to DWRP and don't understand bakerstreet's culture. I set up over three threads this past month with seemingly eager RPers (ftr I don't know them personally), we have talked setting and timelines, and then every single one has ghosted after I write the first tag.

Has bakerstreet always been like this? Am I alone in this experience and it's a "me" problem? Will I get a tag in a month?

You may have better luck with people on the https://enablemeplz.dreamwidth.org/ meme. It happens the last saturday of every month, and people advertise looking for PSLs there. I've had a better return on PSLs there than I have in bakerstreet.

I don't even bother with bakerstreet anymore. EMP has its share of flakes but it's much easier to find reliable rp partners there.

Hi, anon. I'm sorry your experience with bakerstreet has been a flop so far. Since you know about this comm and have hopefully read the guides in the resources link, I'm going to assume you aren't doing anything that might seem odd to dwrp veterans like using asterisks or introducing tumblr-like headcanons.

The most likely reason is that memes are seen as disposable by a large majority of players, we're afraid of confrontation when things aren't what we expect or want, and the pandemic is causing stress that makes RP harder or kills motivation.

If you haven't already, I recommend creating a post on your journal with preferences to make it clear you're cool with backtags (specifying how long is a good idea) and ooc discussion if indeed you are. We're a anxious, avoidant bunch overall but little steps like that may help facilitate communication between you and potential RP partners.

I hope you can find more considerate people to play against. It's a lot of fun when you find someone you mesh with.

I took a several year break from DWRP and came back to play a new canon so I was looking for more people to play with

as much as people like to shit on them, I had the best luck finding people to play with on the texting memes and then after a thread or two I would PM them and ask if they wanted to do something else, especially if they had preferences, ideas, or wishlists on their journal. I still post on memes but it's rare that I get tagged by anyone not on my plurk list.

surprised no one has told you to "just tag out more" rather than acknowledge dwrp's problem with flaking.

i mean "over three" is not a big number, and would be mitigated by tagging out more, but it's probably worthwhile to give more detailed help in this case.

this is a brand new person to dwrp and they've tried to be outgoing and start threads only for them to go nowhere 3 times in a row

can we please stop normalizing the false enthusiasm + ghosting bullshit? any one of those other players could have said no thank you at any point. instead, they let another player believe they were interested, had them write a starter, then left them wondering what they did wrong. frankly, it shouldn't have happened once.

... uh, have you guys forgotten that there's a global crisis going on right now? this is a very stressful time for a lot of people irl. i have otherwise reliable rp partners who have been leaving me hanging for a week or more at a time because they just don't have consistent mental energy for creativity right now. you would think that a lot of free time would translate to a lot of tagging but that isn't always the case.

how do you know your partner doesn't have consistent mental energy for creativity? because they let you know, right?

It doesn't take a lot of creativity or time to send someone a message saying exactly that. Ghosting someone is rude and the constant excuses for flaking are getting old. Once this shit is over you'll just have a new excuse for the flakes.

but "tag out more", when the number is that low, is still viable advice. chill out. it's also not cool to inundate new people with "DWRP HAS A HUGE FLAKE PROBLEM" because that's not gonna make them want to stick it out, either.

New or old member, it's just as offputting. You make it sound like ghosting shouldn't matter to someone who's been here for longer.

Unfortunately there's no way to shield new members from flakes. IT would be great if there were.

OP, I would still encourage you to try a bit longer, and to advertise here (rp with me thread) and/or EMP. I've had terribly bad luck with memes (and complained about it here many times), but I've also had surprisingly good luck just recently.

Next time you're on bakerstreet, take note of who you see tagging out and maintaining long threads with others. Try tagging those people.
