what's the general etiquette about putting a character on a tdm that you don't have any intention of apping at all? especially when it's a character with a big cast already in the game (so castmates might get excited)? I really like these tdm prompts and just want to have some fun with this character, is it a faux pas to just throw them in?

you'll get some people who say you shouldn't and those who say it doesn't matter but imo you should at least make note that you aren't interested in apping in your tag. don't be a jerk by getting people excited with the hope you might join, or give the impression to others who might want to app that character.

like anon says above you'll find people with different opinions on it but a lot of people do it anyway. imo, it's a test drive meme, i.e. it's not a guarantee you will or won't app, the point is to test it out.

it's not a big deal at the end of the day and in your case it's more courteous to 1) not top level and tag out instead, and 2) if you do top level or if you do have any prospective castmates hit you up it's also courteous to drop a quick line (probably in subject headers) that you're just testing the waters and probably won't app but are here to have fun in the meantime.

who knows, you may surprise yourself. there's times i've done this and got totally swayed to join and had a good time. there's times that just reinforced it was a good idea to keep it to a momentary bit of fun in the tdm. that is the entire point of a tdm, and people easily forget it's more than just seeing if the setting gels right. it's about gelling with the players too.

you can always offer to psl with them outside of the game setting/tdm if you hit it off with anyone

agreeing with the anons who say to make an ooc note about your intention not to app. it will help keep disappointment down from the people who get excited that you might be apping and it will also let others who might be considering actually apping that character know there won't be any competition, drama, or bad feelings if they reserve or put up their own tdm toplevel.
