Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

advice for approaching a late-1800s character in a modern setting? canonically he's very ahead of his time with regards to both technology and cultural awareness, but still.

i don't think it would be fun for anyone to play a constant refrain of "what's this? what's this?" but i also don't want it to seem like he's just slid into modern times with no issues. what do you hate about playing alongside characters from historical eras? what do you enjoy?

i've written a character from the mid 1800s and 2 characters from the first half of the 20th c in modern times and i've found that one thing that works is to decide ahead of time what revelations have come to them offscreen to avoid that constant stream of 'what's this'.

the way we perceive things is also framed by the time in which we grew up, regardless of how progressive we may be - so don't be afraid to show that in your writing. for instance, even if a character doesn't agree with the level to which western victorian women were expected to cover up, it's still going to come as a shock to see things like bodycon dresses or legs exposed to mid-thigh because it's not something they've seen before, and a single 'oh, that's normal now' realization isn't going to erase their cultural conditioning.

i like playing alongside other historical characters who have their own era-typical (or slightly era atypical) mentalities. experience shapes who you are and every point in history is very different. historical characters aren't just a millenial/gen xer in period clothes - they take part of their former setting with them.
